POST DAVINCI PSA

WE JUST GOT OUR 8 WEEK PSA RESULT AFTER SURGERY.   THANKFULLY, ALL IS WELL.   JUST CURIOUS WHY IS THERE A PSA OF ANY SLIGHTNESS OF NUMBER IF THERE IS NO LONGER A PROSTATE AND THE DOCTOR SAYS ALL THE CANCER WAS REMOVED

WOULD IT NOT BE .00000?

It is my understanding that the PSA detecting techniques have evolved over time. There are generation 1, generation 2 and generation 3 machines to detect PSA. Each became more sensitive as they developed. I believe Gen 1 detects to 1 decimal place, Gen 2 detects to 2 decimal places and Gen 3 detects to 3 decimal places. It is also my understanding that the sample is run through the machine 3 times and the reading averaged as at very low readings there are inconsistencies. As Tim says, doctors consider anything below 0.1 as undetectable and quite often, irrespective of which machine delivers which result that is how it is reported (<0.1.......undetectable). My tests always were reported to 1 decimal place till I had my GP request the ultra sensitive result. So well done and congratulations on the surgery results.

On the test... As others have indicated, the accuracy of the test at those low levels won't permit a definitive 0.0 reading.  When I had my second test and was given results of <.04, my doctor said that a woman could get the same reading!

you have great news. i had my 6 week psa test and nurse came in and said it was .04. the doctor came in and said it was undetectable and went on to say this was great news.
