Hi Everybody,
I have never really dealt with dr's before so i dont know how to do this. I have researched and have found what i feel are 2 excellent places that do davinci around where i live. My dr does not. so i would like to bring my slides and my pathology report to them for there opinions.do i just ask him to give me my slides? does he get mad that i want a second opinion? does he charge me for my stuff. i just get the impression that getting my info is going to be tuff.

It is my understanding that the pathology lab that did the testing will have your slides and your doctor only a written report.  Have the new doctor or doctors to request the slides from the path lab. Things like x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs can normally be signed obtained and carried with you.  Normally they like them returned so the files stay intact. 

Most doctors provide other doctors free copies of medical information as a courtesy.  There might be a small charge for copies given to you but my doctors game me all I needed free.

Just remember the test were paid for by you or your insurance company and your intitled to copies even though the original reports stay with the doctor who did them.

Other may have additional help also.  Good luck

Hi Rick,
Don't need to add much more than Richard said. Remember these are YOUR slides no charges should be assessed to get them. If they need to be transported there might be a charge, but that should be covered by insurance. I actually went to my new doctors and they sent me a form (HIPPA law release) and they took care of the rest.

After all was said and done, we asked for the records just because we wanted to read them and have them for our own records. The receptionist asked if just wanted the path report and Kent said no he wanted the whole file. She charged us $10.00. I think if we had asked the doctor instead he would have just given them to us.

There are no such things as "dumb" questions here nono

All that folks have said is correct.  YOU are in the drivers seat.  You just have to start the "car" and drive it where you want to.  The doctors and other health care professionals are there to serve you.  I know that sometimes they don't act like it, but most are pretty good.  You and your insurance company are paying the bill.

I think you will find that Dr's that do not do DaVinci surgery will probably refer you to one that does. My doctor did refer me to Vanderbilt and I opted to go ahead with the RRP and I am glad I did.
I personally do not think you will have any problem getting the information you are seeking or even a referal.

about your question whether the doc would get made at you if you wanted a 2nd opinion........my response would be, "who cares?".

This is YOUR life......you get as many opinions that you want.

I was fortunate, my urologist realized that patients do get 2nd opinions, and told me he had no problem at all if I did pursue a 2nd opinion or seeked out treatment from someone else.

Since I wanted robotic surgery (which my urologist didn't do), I had no problems "shopping around".

I believe it's Dr. Strum who specializes in PCa and is a PCa patient himself, who says "Remember, M.D. does not stand for medical deity." Never forget that.
