Please help- newly diagnosed with prostate cancer

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to everyone who replied.  My husband found the information you guys posted very encouraging.  We ended up making an appointment with Dr. Wilson at City of Hope.  We heard he is one of the best, and many of you referred him as well.

Now, I have some confusing news to share as well.  My husband's urologist called him today.  He told us he sent the biospy specimen to another pathologist and they don't think it is cancer.  The second pathologist said that while the cells looks suspicious, they are not cancerous, at least not yet.  We are confused.... the urologist wants to do another biopsy in 2 months, this time a saturated biopsy only on the left side of his prostate, since that is where the cancer was found.  We are still going to keep our appt with Dr. Wilson, and bring the pathology reports  to see what he thinks.

Just wanted to thank everyone and give everyone an update.  Thanks for all your support!!!

When my slides were read by another pathologist when I went for a second opinion on treatment he indicated that it was not cancer but atypical. The protocol of the urologist that I went to for the second opinion in these cases is to send the slides to Dr. Jon Epstein at John Hopkins. He is the nationally known expert pathologist for PCa. You might want to have your urologist arrange for the slides to be sent to DR. Epstein for review.

Hi Nini,

So glad you found this group..and a good group of Physician's to treat your husband.

I've read our post and your confusion that his slides went to another pathologist. This is very common. Any responsible pathologist would do the same thing.

Hubby's PSA is 3.6 and he has atypical cells now. He's only 43. The question to ask.....are these cells suspicious for cancer or absolutely benign? Suspicious for is equal to in my book. Epstein's too for that fact.

I'm not compare war stories today but these biopsies don't tell the whole story of what's going on inside that prostate. If your insurance will afford him, ask if a color doppler ultrasound would be of any help. I really don't know. No way on this earth would I want my husband to trade a now curable cancer for a year of freedom. He's curable now. I'd want some assurance he'd still be curable in another year. Knowing they cannot guarentee a single thing, let hubby make hs own decision but, keep a really close eye on things. I know what the decision is like myself. Prostates aren't the only organ biopsied. Giving in to the knife takes some pondering. Good luck to you both. Hang in there.

Along with Swim's color doppler suggestion - would a "free" PSA shed any light on this??

A free PSA is normally a good idea. Unfortunately, it is not a reliable level when a man's PSA is so low.

The free is so small it isn't considered a useful measure. A good thought though :-)

I would like to get information from anyone who has had robotic prostatectomy done by Dr. Vipul Patel.  I am giving serious consideration to asking him to do robotic RP for me.

hello there nini.youve come to the right place for answers, im 43 and 5 weeks out of surgery, and would do it the exact same way all over again .i researched my docs ALOT i live in northern ca. 500 miles away from city of hope , there are several good docs closer to me with divinci experience BUT NO ONE CAN GIVE YOU  BETTER TREATMENT IN SO.CAL THAN CITY OF HOPE  i also considered u.c. irvine however ahlering now works on a cash only basis (no comment) .granted this is only my opinion  however it appears to be several peoples opinion . remember you get one shot at this get the best ,my doc was dr, mark kawachi and man  is he good ,..... im 5 weeks out almost 6 almost fully continent  1 pad a day and the wife and i had sex 2 days post cath removal , some of this is due to age ,20% 80% is the doc please email me if you wanna talk or if you feel the need to speak with another  woman  about this , yes it is scary however it is not impossible to get through , please continue to post here as this site is invaluable to you and your hubby at this point ,the people on here even were answering my questions while i was 1-2 days post op in a hotel room  i hope you feel this is where you need to be  because we wanna be here for you , your gonna do great really........................dirt     [email protected]
