My husband is going to have a Cystoscopy on Thursday. I'm a wreck.
Could you answer True or False. (Fun Game, Guys)

The Cystoscopy can be emotionally devastating for a male. (True or False)
Strong Antibiotics should be given before the Cystoscopy (True or False)
Strong Antibiotics should be given after the Cystoscopy (True or False)
The doctor should send patient home with pain pills. (True or False)
The rod they insert in the Penis should be flexible not rigid. (True or false)

I'm not sure what the doctor suspects. I do know that I, myself, am going to have a Cystoscopy the very next week. Any information will be appreciated

I've had 2 Cystoscopys and it's not really very traumatic. It takes only a few minutes and with the local anesthetic that's used, it's not really painful.
They gave me a Cipro just before the procedure and one more for the next day. I got no pain pills, nor did I need them.
I don't actually recall if the rod was flexible or not, I tried not to watch.
Other than being embarrassing, it's not a big deal.
The doctor can be looking for a variety of things from a blockage to bladder function to bladder cancer. Your husband certainly has a right to know why the procedure's being done.

    Pam,  I seem to be one of the "resident experts" of having things run up my pee hole here.  I have had one regular cystoscopy and FOUR contigen injections.  The cystoscopy is a flexible probe that articulates at the end so the Doctor can look at all areas of the urinary tract and bladder.  The way my doctor does them is one of the assistants (usually a young female!!!) is put some numbing jell down inside the penis using a squeeze applicator.  After several minutes the Doctor will lube the probe and insert it.  All I ever felt was a little pressure and a bit of burning.  Over all not that bad of an ordeal.  I was given one antibiotic tablet to take when I got home.  Some mild discomfort and blood urine the rest of the evening.  The next day all was fine.

   As far a contigen injections!!!   Those are done with a rigid metal probe that the needle goes up through.  Enough said about that!!!!!!

Had one about a month ago.... kind of uncomfortable, but nothing traumatic...didn't take too long, and felt fine after a couple of hours.....AND I'M A REAL CHICKEN----worse to think about than having it actually done.

I've had Cysto's for years and for me they have always been a walk in the park. They are performed usually in the treatment room at the Dr's office or clinic. All they have ever done with me was put some numbing meds in the opening of the penis, then the Doc uses a fiber optic instrument to thread up the urethra and performs an examination of the inside of the bladder. This just takes a couple of minutes. The whole procedure takes less than 15 minutes including the numbing. Afterwards, I am always given an antibiotic, usually Levaquin or Cipro. I have a history of bladder tumors, a couple which have been cancerous, so that is the reason I have had so many. I hope this helps you, nothing to get excited about...jwb.

thanks for these posts guys. I've had many colonoscopies, and a prostate biopsy - not that bad. But my worries are slowly easing about the cystoscopy tomorrow.

Just remember this is a prostate site. We hav all had to park our modesty at the door. It could be a little embarrassing at first, but just realize you are just another penis to the cute little assistant.

Pain is minimal, risk fir infection is actually less than a catheter, but the antibiotics are a good idea anytime you stick things into your bladder.

In the over all scheme of things, no worse than having a physical fir the Army with 50 other naked guys.

My understanding is that the bladder is inflated with a saline solution during the cysto procedure.  I was completely unaware of this.  There's no sensation of it being done.

I peed after the procedure as directed, but at that time, with my large prostate and urinary problems, I obviously failed to empty my bladder.  I didn't know that it had been pumped full of liquid.  On the way home, I had two choices:  pee all over the driver's seat, or pull over and pee on the side of the road.  Of course, I chose the side of the road option, but it was more than a little embarrassing.

The procedure itself was no big deal, but don't be in a hurry to leave until you're sure you've emptied your bladder.

I have had 8 done, but under conditions of being in pain prior to the scoping. With men, they only use flexible scopes, because of how us guys are "plumbed". For women, the scope is usually shorter and rigid, as its a shorter path and a stright path to the bladder.

The real trick is to have the doctor use a lot of lydacaine gel to numb. And it needs to numb a good 10-15 minutes to work best, some docs are in a hurry and want to proceed before inserting the scope.

If your husband is not circumsised, insertion can be more difficult, depending on how easily his fore skin can roll back to expose the tip of his urethra.

There will be feelings of pressure, more than any pain as a rule. And it feels creepy coming back out.

An antibiotic after for a day or two seems to be the norm.

I have had far worse done to me than the scopes. He should do fine.

KW's experience and mine are the same..Including the young, female assistant..

The THOUGHT of what they are doing is FAR worse that what they are actually doing...Just stare at the ceiling and relax..

I HAD MINE FOR KIDNEY STONES. IT'S A WAY TO LOOK INTO THE BLADDER.
Cancer is suspected .

I went in with Michael when he had his done. They numbed his penis, which included putting this numbing cream in the hole, which wasnt so nice, but wasnt really uncomfortable (he told me) otherwise, they put a clip on his penis to hold it up straight, the clip was not painful and I dont think he even knew that was happening. The Dr came in, he put the "tube" inside the penis, we watched the camera, looked like walking down a pink hall (haha, what a way to look at it, but the best way to describe it) The Dr told him he would feel some pressure as he pushed into the bladder, he did, then they filled the bladder with water, looked around and then said "gonna pull it out" And it was out in seconds. The whole thing took about 5 minutes. The dr left, Michael got up from the table went to the bathroom, he was still numb so didnt feel anything. Cleaned off, got dressed and came back into the room. He said his first pee when getting home burned slightly but otherwise, it was a painless and really uneventful procedure.

We were concerned about it as well. But you will come to find that this is really not a big deal and you will wonder afterwards why you worried about it.
