Pete had the AUS surgery...He has been home one day, and has been sitting and lying down. In quite a bit of pain. He is bleeding from the incision in the scrotum? Is this normal? I am a little worried here...He seems to think it is OK....Di

You may have noticed from some of my posts that I had a problem with both my incisions following AUS & IPP surgery.  However, this developed about two or three weeks post surgery, not at the time of surgery.  If Pete is literally bleeding (red), I think I would contact the surgeon.  If it is merely "weeping" or seeping fluid, it probably is not anything to worry about.  But remember you have paid and/or are paying the surgeon to look after you.  I would call him... and I did call mine when things did not appear normal to me.  He never was worried, but of course it was not his body.

Hi Divo.  Mine did not bleed at all.  May be nothing to worry about, but I would contact the surgeon

 and set your mind at rest.

So hope your husband will have be fine when the AUS heals.

He has been through so much and you have, also.

husband 68 when diagnosed, will turn 70 October 9th.

I agree that if it is bleeding bright red or a fairly large ammount I would call the Doctor for sure. If is just seeping I would wait a few more days to see if it will heal up. I do not know if Pete is letting things "air out" or not. But I found it helped to sit for a while with eveything exposed to the fresh air (Inside the House that is!!!).

It has been six days, and Pete has a lot of pain on the right side. He cannot get up by himself out of bed. He needs me to pull him up. Scrotum is still swollen, but the side pain is what is really hurting....We called the nurse, and she didnt seem concerned. Did any of you guys with the AUS implants have this side pain. We are thinking it might be where the surgeon cut through the muscle to put the cuff in....Di

I had no such pain in my side.  I do not know exactly where the cuff, tubing, or reservoir goes in, but it's my impression either everything goes in in the scrotum incision or in the incision between scrotum and rectum (if he had an incision there).  I do not think that muscle would have been cut.  I think the surgeon would have "tunneled" up to place the reservoir for the saline solution in the abdomen. "Tunnelling" is how my surgeon placed my saline reservoir.  

Is his release valve on the right side?  Mine is.  If so, that is probably the reason for the pain because the "tunneling" would disturb some of the tissue.  Moreover, the reservoir must have some kind of fastener (to something) to keep it in place.  I don't know exactly how it is fastened, but I feel certain it is.  But I did not have pain there.  I think doctors and nurses can be too brief in their answers.  It would be good if the surgeon or his nurse would take the time to explain why Pete may be having that kind of pain, since they are not worried. 

Has his incision bleeding stopped?

Thanks Gene, Yes, the bleeding has almost stopped, however, his pain on the right side is still very strong....I think you may be correct in your talking about the tunneling of the saline reservoir. Dr. Sandhu , who was the surgeon, at MSK, made an incision in the right side of the abdomen, and also under the scrotum....I will call again on Monday, and request some more answers if the pain does not subside... We are at the mercy of the medical profession... Diane

    I guess there are different ways to install the AUS.  I had complete perineal incision and a 1 inch incison on the left side of the scrotum.  I assume the works were installed through the perineal area.  The relief valve sits right on top of the left testicle.  I had no incision in the abdomen area?

Hi Divo,

I had the same procedure as your husband - incision in the perinium and also in the lowwer abdomen where they placed the reservoir.  This soreness you are describing does not sound normal.  I would definitely get it looked into.  You would want to rule out infection.
