Man I agree with Kcragman . . . I thought the biopsy was worse than the surgery.

Funny, you nearly started a new topic: "Is Biopsy worse than Surgery?"

I found the overall surgery experience, including the catheter issues, to be worse. But, I have to agree that the biopsy was pretty darned unpleasant.
It's evern written up in my doctor's notes: "This was not tolerated well."

Sorry Sandstorm, DJBearGuy is correct - I was thinking about the first 24 hours after surgery. They suck pretty bad, but the catheter thing really sucks!

But - you will be like the rest of us. You will step up to the plate, you will be absolutely amazed at what you can put up with, you will learn a ton of little tricks to help yourself get by physically and mentally, and after the catheter comes out in a week or 10 days it will be like friggin Christmas all over again. So see? Something to look forward to.

At this point I can only mention two words - stool softeners. Get them, use them, love them.

Hi Sand, just to drop a note and wish you well in your surgery. Always keep your head up and remain positive in your attitude...the most important part of healing not only for you but for your loved ones as well. Soon enough you will be on here helping others like the rest of us. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask, lots of good folks here with answers from the real world and not from some doctors brochure. No offense to the litature available, but sometimes the questions need real life experience answers and not just statistics.

From reading above remark, I guess I must clarify, that for me, myself, it took 5-6 days to have my first bm. They tried everytrick in the hospital, laxatives, warm prune juice, and got nothing but stomach rumbling, the doc. said that was good enough for him, and they released me after 4 days without a real bm.
Yes, everybody has a diff. story there, didn't mean to imply there was some set time.

For many, perhaps the catheter is a minor inconvience, but I am finishing up on day 53 with one in place, it's a little more then inconvient, lol.

Tom, no pain med after leaving the hospital? Either you have an amazing threshold of pain tolerance, or perhaps having a robotit really does cut down the pain edge. I feel I am pretty tough, but I didn't wean off of prescription pain meds after my open RP surgery until about week 3, and I hate to take meds. Again, we are all different.

We are in this club for whatever reason. I am drawn here, because I learn and I get a few laughs now and then...and also when I post something about my dear husband, I get responses. You folks are terrific and we all are in this together....I think some of you know more than the doctors....really....... Diane

Hi Michael, Welcome to the show that never ends. Seems we have more new folks showing up all the time, which is distressing. Hope insurance covers your procedure(as it should). Listen to the vets here. They have been down the road ahead of you and are a wealth of good advice. I've learned so much here from folks like Tony,Di, David is SC, Biker, etc. Read and assimilate. We will watch your progress and don't be a stranger.

When I went into my surgery, I was told the cath would be in 10-14 days max, when I came out of surgery, the dr, due to surgical difficulties, told me 30. The rest of my long cath saga is well documented here.

Not happy about still having one this long, by after two complete blockages and their associated pains, I no longer go nuts about it. The pain was way worse then the catheters, I promise you that.

I agree, Sand should do well on his robot surgery, like the majority of the men here do that opt that choice. I wish him only the best.

Here's my two cents:

Surgery goes fast.  I had DaVinci as well.  Catheter was never a problem out in 7 days.  Went outdoors with it and no problem. Here is just a couple of recomendations:

No lifting anything heavier than a nice beef roast for six weeks.

Hold your belly with a pillow when you cough or sneeze

Be careful with twisting motions

Walk, walk and then walk some more.
