Hi All,

Well it looks like my day has finally come around and tomorrow I'm going in for my robotic lapro surgery. I've got a doctor I trust, a procedure that I believe to be effective, and good family support so now it's time to get it done. Once I set this up back in December I pretty much concentrated on enjoying life and I tried not to think too much about the surgery and aftermath, but here it is now so here I go. One of my doctors made the remark that this disease is like riding a rollercoaster with the difference being you can't choose to get off. I sometimes think of this surgery as a kind of controlled car crash where I know I'll probably survive but I'm just not sure what the damage is going to be. In any case, the main thing is I hope they get all the cancer and that the side effects, over time, aren't too bad.
I feel very lucky to live in a time when there are excellent treatments and surgeries available to help us with this disease and I hope they get better in the future. I'm also thankful for this group that allows so many people to communicate with each other so easily and thus end some of the isolation that can occur with this illness. Thanks for all your great information and posts, you're all making an even bigger difference than you probably know.

Uh-oh, I think that pre-op magnesium citrate bowel cleansing solution is starting to kick in, I better get a move on.................. : )

Mirv, best of luck to you, your surgeon, and your family. We look forward to seeing you on the other side. Then you will be on the recovery side of your treatment. We are here for you, brother, just remember that.

Mark,

We will all be thinking of you tomorrow. Your post brought back so many memories of the day before surgery. We can't help but be apprehensive, but just be assured you will be getting the best care possible. The worst is behind you...getting the news you have PC. Mine was open surgery, and it really wasn't bad at all. I was back at work in three weeks.

I'll say a special prayer for you tonight.

I just discovered this site and have not yet completed "my address," but wanted to wish you all well tomorrow. I was in your situation on the evening of 5 November 08 and had the DaVinci-assisted radical prostatecomy the next morning (cancerous cells contained in one quadrant, Gleason 4+4=8, no sign of escape from capsule). The surgery went well, out-of-hospital the next afternoon, and an uncomplicated and pretty quick recovery. Post surgerical PSA on 19 Dec was 0.01 - "undetectable." Full continency achieved in mid-January. ER still present but the situation getting better by the week! All of this to say to encourage and support your confidence that you have done the right thing and that you are in a great position to be cured and beat The Beast. My thoughts will be with you tomorrow - be sure and let us know how it went and we can help. I have a hunch that your resources for support and counsel on this forum are countless! Be well my man!!!

Isn't the bowel prep the most insidious of medecine's crreations? Starve, then purge, then purge some more, and some more, and some more, etc. You'll do fine tomorrow...especially after the Verced kicks in. After that they could cut off your head and you wouldn't care. My wife told me that as they were wheeling me in the nurse asked, "Do you know what you're having done?" My reply, "How long have I been a nun?" Better living through chemistry. I asked for a six pack to go of the good stuff. See you on the other side. Bon chance.

Your biopsy shows you got this thing early, and you will find the surgery for most of us was less of a hassle than the biopsy. Regardless, soon it will be behind you and you will be on the healing end. I know for me the stress before surgery was by far the worst part of it. The post surgery for the most part was happy time.

All should go very well for you, good journey. The guy that got the first LRRP in the USA was around 43 yrs. old or so, and he says he was playing golf within a few days, of course catheter must have been with him.  I met the guy on a follow up visit at Henry Ford Hosp. in 2002, he was coming back in for a check up with Dr. Menon.  They filmed his LRRP and because of the documentation his surgery actually ended up with 6-7 hours instead of 3 hrs. wink or so.  He has bragging rights to being the first in the USA to have it done, of course the French were here to train Dr. Menon whom had a very good reputation as a surgeon anyway. Took a little moxy to know you were the first one getting this back then, now it is very common in alot of places.

Mirv,  Although you may not read this until after your surgery, I want to wish you a speedy recovery.  Take care my friend and feel free to chime in here anytime.  I'll remember you in my prayers tonight.  Let us know how things are coming along.
