Discomfort after bone scan procedure.

Good Morning,

I had a bone scan procedure performed yesterday to try and find out what is causing the discomfort on my left-side, rear quadrant of the back.  I understand that this procedure does not cause any pain or discomfort during the procedure, but it has been 24hrs since the injection and the discomfort on my left-side is now ten-fold and I am trying to concetrate, finding it a little difficult, is there anyone out there that can provide me some information concerning this?

I haven't done the scan but this sure sounds like a CALL your doctor deal.

The scan shouldn't hurt, and shouldn't increase your previous pain, you definitely need to make time to go see your doctor.

Pain after a bone scan is extremely rare and should be checked out. You might do better calling the people who did your scan because they will know exactly what you were injected with.

Also consider that there might be some other cause for the pain -- given its severity, what would you do if you had no idea why you hurt?

Finally, if you choose to "tough it out" drink lots of water, this will help your body clear the imaging chemicals and is standard advice to all imaging patients.

Thanks Geezer99, I have had a constant case of Kidney Stones over the last few years, but this pain in my side is totally different than the "Stone Hell", so at least I do have experience with this "discomfort". Don't you all just love that word, "Discomfort", everytime I hear it I just want to hit the idiot that said it. Well haven't heard back from the Dr's office yet so that's a good sign, thanks for the advise maybe I go see him tomorrow.

Hi

I had an "odd" reaction to the CT Scan. The injection, besides making me warm, also put me into a sneezing fit. The tech had to wait on the last scan process until I stopped sneezing, about 10 minutes. Then the office made me wait around for an hour for "observation".

So you could have had some unusual reaction. In my case, the tech said that she had seen my reaction before but it was very rare.

That is some kind of reaction, hopefully everything went well afterward. I know that usual X-ray dyes have the "Warming" effect, and most of the time this does not last too long, but with the "Bone Scan" the dye is to find the "Hot spots" in your bones for fractures, arthirtis, or bone cancer. 99% of the time it should have no ill effect, only small amount of radioactive dye used, but what is bothering me is the fact that the reason for this scan in the first place was for Lower,left-hand, rear quadrant pain just under the ribs, and tender to the touch, much to my Wife's dismay. Just after the scan, I'd say reoughly 3 hours afterward, I started getting a headache and I began to notice that my side was burning. That night it just got steadily worse and then I awoke on Wedneday feeling like somebody kicked me in the ribs, now on Thursday we have the same "kicked in the ribs" feeling with the new drag the knife towards the waist. I am going to phone the Doc and see if he can BS his way out of this one. Thanks for the coment, looks like your doing better, how was the last PSA count? Stay well thanks again.

Reactions to the dye used in CT scans, while very rare, can be extremely dangerous. You seem ok now but let me urge you to collect all of the information about this reaction now while you remember it. Contact the people who did the scan and find out exactly what dye and what dose you were given (If they wrote a report on your reaction get a copy of that too.).

The issue is that this incident may have sensitized your body to the dye. If you ever have another CT scan it is very important that you be able to provide as much information about your reaction as possible before that scan. This doesn’t mean that the next time will be worse, but that everyone needs to go into it knowing as much as possible
