My boyfriend loves his bike and a friend of mine who's a nurse for 20 years with cancer patients advised me he shouldn't ride the rest of the summer. Another doctor agreed. But the doctor who's doing the robotic surgery said it would be fine after four weeks. He also made a comparison to riding a riding lawnmower, which I think is ignorant. I read an article about electromagnetic fields from the bike causing prostate cancer, but that wasn't the reason the ones advised no riding for the summer. It was more about the pressure on the area. His bike is a big, heavy Harley. I'd rather he play it safe and not take any chances. Anyone care to support my position in being the "mean mommy"?

I can't speak to the medical advisability or otherwise. But if his experience is like mine, he'll have some swelling and discomfort in that area for several weeks, which will subside over time. When he's comfortable, he can ride.

Of course, my perspective may not apply to him, since my 250K miles were mostly on BMW's.

Oh, and he's going to have some incisions in the abdomen that will make it really a bad idea to try to pick up his mount if he lays it down, for maybe 4-6 weeks.

I haven't been on a bike since high school...but based on the way I felt in a car coming home after surgery with the minor bumps in the road...I would imagine that your friend won't feel up to riding for awhile. But at the same time after he feels up to it, I would encourage him...all part of the healing process if not overdone.

It heals the mental attitude inside when you are able to not let cancer and it's aftermath dictate what your life should be like. biker Jim is a good reminder of that for all of us here.

Dear Mean Mommy, I have been reading and learning from this site for one year tonight.  This is my one year anniversary of prostate surgery and there is no better prostate cancer site on line anywhere and the intelligence and passion this group portrays is absolutely outstanding.  I'm sorry you are here but you can make a difference.  I have no doubt that through the thoughts and considerations expressed on this site, my grandchildren will not have to consider what we have had to go through as little as ten years down the road. I am an avid cruiser rider and was on my heavy weight cruiser 6 weeks after surgery.  Motorcycle riding to pure mental health and I am sure you will agree after going through diagnosis, surgery and recovery, it is time for the mind to be at peace.  If it hurts, don't ride.  If it doesn't then enjoy one of God's pleasures.  Simple as that. Let him enjoy the ride, he's earned it. Just tell him that if that hawg falls over, don't try to pick it up...

Hi, my surgeon mentioned no riding for 6 weeks, i had my robotic surgery last Thursday, i would wait the 6 weeks and like ironman mentioned if it hurts don't do it. I am in New York and could not wait for the winter to end, but after being dx in March did not do any riding before surgery. As you know, days and weeks fly by, and before you know it, the surgery and next 6 week will pass by, best wishes. Jake

I am a little over 4 months out from my RBB surgery.  about two weeks ago I rode my mountain bike that has a smallish seat, no problems.  about 9 weeks out from my surgery I was riding big heavy Police Road King Harleys that have the solo saddle seat with an air bladder that supports the seat with no problems.  I also have a Honda XR650L dual sport bike that has a narrow seat but I have not been on that yet.  let him ride if he wants to, it put me in a better state of mind to be able to ride again.

All this talk about motorcycles makes me wish I still had my 2004 Triumph Sprint ST, sold it one year before my PC dx, totally unrelated. After my open surgery, there is no way I could have sat on a bike or even wanted to for at least the first two months, it was hard enough getting comfortable in a nice car seat or sofa at home, but hey, each of us is different.
