Acute Urinary Retention after Catheter Removal? WAS No Subject

Has anyone experienced acute urinary retention after having the catheter removed? Cath removed 10 days after RP, had to be reinserted.

Yes, my story is epic here, I was on series of caths for 63 days after my surgery. I was on 5 different ones, two had to be put in during emergency situations. In the end, my surgeon had to correct the problem with a scoping operation to enlarge the bladder neck opening, I have been cath free since Jan. 19th, but where I use to pee like a race horse, I now pee with a greatly reduced flow, and by the end of the day, it can hurt a lot up inside near the bladder neck. My surgeon was afraid to mess with it any more, in case he caused me to be incontinent. I have been 100% dry for several months now, so that is the good news.

I hope your situation won't be as severe, sometimes in your case, the 2nd cath does the trick and allows a little more healing time, and all is well after its removal.

My cath was in for five weeks.

Ask your surgeon about doing a cystogram before removing it next time.

cystogram is an x-ray used to check for problems of the bladder and lower urinary tract.

PS Mine was the result of a very difficult surgery where the bladder neck attached to the urethra, the original catheter was in for 30 days, and that is before the rest of the problems developed.

My urine flow slowed everyday for a week after removal of the cath then it stopped. Not good. The URO jammed rods of every increasing size up the old winnie. Pissed like a horse after that

Right after I had my catheter removed, I was able to dribble on command. For about 8 hours. Then, nothing. Wife had to take me to an ER in the middle of the night. After another week, they did a cystogram to make sure there was no leakage, and had me take ibuprofen to reduce swelling. Been basically OK ever since.

I had my Foley catheter out at 9:00 AM 14 days after radical retropubic prostatectomy. By 4:00 PM that same day I was back to my doctor’s office to have another Foley catheter inserted (second) since I had not been able to urinate at all. It came out again after 3 more days, and this time I had some leakage into a pad, but I was in the emergency room at midnight on the second day to have a new Foley inserted (third). Once again the doctor removed it after a couple of days, and I was back in the emergency room at midnight again to have another Foley reinserted (fourth). After one day, my doctor taught me how to self-catheter and sent me away without a Foley, but a supply of one-time use catheters that I could use myself. For 12 days more I used the self-catheter method to drain my bladder, then I started emptying on my own. In all, it took 34 days after surgery to be finally rid of all catheters.   In all this time my doctor said the problem was that my sphincter was not releasing, and that I simply needed patience. He said there was no blockage or other problem.   So far, it seems like patience has paid off. Not all urinary retention is a sign of a problem.   It's been 10 days now urinating without a catheter, but most of the fluid goes into a pad and not the toilet. I'm dry at night but have no control when walking or doing any physical activity. I'm doing Kegel exercises and hoping for some improvement soon.

Yup.  It happened to me twice after I had my cath out.  The first time about 3 days after it was removed.  My bladder locked and the pain level was almost untolerable.   I was recathed at the ER.  It turned out I had a severe bladder infection.

I had that cath taken out after a week, and lo and behold....36 hours it locks again.  Another trip to the ER and a new cath.  It turns out I still had the bladder infection.

My 2nd cath was in for a week after I had a bladder tumor removed and the original one was removed the next day but I couldn't pee enough and it was mostly blood. It was removed this morning and when I went to pee I had increasing pain along the left side of the base of the penis and as a result very little came out. The Doc did an ultrasound after I peed a bout 3/4 cup and my bladder was still half full. The pain trying to start the pee makes it only squirt out in dribs. He gave me Flomax but I just had 1 so far. Should I take Detrol which is an anti spasm drug. I am afraid I will lose continence and be in real trouble. Should I expect the spasms to lessen in time or am I stuck with this forever?

update on Chodan's post. Feeling much better and pain when peeing is down to a manageable amoun. But it's like there's a narrowing which I think is a swollen prostate squeezing my urethera. The doctor reported that I had an enlarged prostate but I think it's also more swollen from the poking around in there. Anyone have experience like that?
