Having had a radical prostatectomy in may this year 2009, I had to have non nearve sparing and the surgeon told me Viagra wouldnt work since then I have not seen the surgeon . But the doctor at the check ups and my gp are both giving me viagra which has no effect at all. Has anyone else had non nerve sparing and have they tried vaccum pump and does it work. cool cool yeah

I had my surgery in July. One nerve gone one nerve "partially spared" whatever that means. (I know it meant I didn't grab the surgeon by the throat when he told me.) I was given Cialis and a pump.
There is another site that discusses this subject in more detail than would be considered appropriate in "mixed company" site such as this. It is called franktalk.org and has been mentioned on this site before. One of the members on HW started it for these types of discussions/questions. There is a lot of discussion and info about pumps, injections, etc.

Yes a pump should work, provided you have reasonable circulation down there. I am non nerve spared and get reasonable results, but not fantastic. For fantastic, try injections!

My take on Viagra and the like is that they work on the blood supply, opening up blood vessels. However with non-nerve-sparing, it usually not the blood supply that is the problem, rather it is the nerves not sending signals to the blood vessels.

I am non nerve spared, Viagra did not help. The pump has not yet help either they say with pactice it will. i go  have psa done oct 26 see urologist oct 30 and ill ask about injections . had surgery nov. 19 . 3 months after had 36 treatments of radiation. psa was 1.5,  4 weeks after radiation. hopefully oct 30 it will be good news .

I had non-nerve sparing in Feb. 2009 and my doctor told me that ED meds will not help. He suggested to use the pump daily to make sure that blood will flow and help the healing process and the nerve regeneration. I did use Viagra 3 times and had no effect at all.

It is like anything else. Use it or lose it. I am amazed at the number of guys here who can't find the time....can't be bothered....tried it once and didn't like it...

I am using the pump every morning and every evening for therapy. Haven't missed a day. I use the viagra 100mg MWF without fail. I am only 7 weeks out from surgery and I plan on following this until they tell me to change it up. Can't find time to spend 10 minutes with a pump in the morning and another 10 in the evening? Insanity....

Do I like it? NO! Will that deter me? Heck NO!

How do the injections work are they difficult ,painful and are there any side affects

I have recently stopped injections, and yes, they worked well for me. Pain was very minor as my wife administered mine while I bravely (!) looked away.

I used 27g needles, too coarse as it turned out -- the recommendation often seen here is for 31g. After 100+ injections, I noticed a very slight bend to the left that I didn't have before, and think this may be caused by scarring at the injection sites. But no other side effects.

So as a trial for a few months, I will use just the pump and see how that goes -- this won't preclude a return to injections some time in the future. But as I am seeing some small improvements on the ED front, I'm hoping that won't be necessary.

Re the piano: I took up classical piano for the first time five years ago, and practise about an hour each day. That was part of the reason for choosing my screen name. The other part is that "piano" in music means "soft" -- the state of my erectile department. :-)

 Thanks for your reply never thought about Piano / soft , its good to know about the injections. I have a pump on order will give it a try first . Dont know why doctors are giving me viagra on my consultation befroe the op with the surgeon he said it wouldnt work, suppose they are going through ste processs ??

Keep up the practice have you tried Chopin.. will keep you posted about the pump

stumac, the viagra before and after surgery is to help with blood flow and infusion of tissues. It isn't really for a sexual use now, but to keep a good supply of fresh blood to the area, to promote healing and regeneration from damage leftover from the surgery. If it works for any ED now, then you got a bonus...lol smilewinkgrin
