My husband had Robotic surgery on Nov 17. 5 days later, catheter was out. at that time, doctor didn't prescript any ED pills, instead, he ask us go back to have PSA tested and talk about the ED issue on Juanary 4, 2010. which will be the 7th week after surgery. The doctor said during these 7 weeks my husband can find out where he at for the ED then decide what kind of med he should take.

this doctor is my husband's surgeon's assistant. originally, when we interview surgeon, was told would prescript ED pills right after catheter is out to start getting blood flow.

my question is, how many days after surgery, the patient should start taking ED pills? I don't think this 7 weeks is right.

now the surgery is over, leaking is improving (only use 2 pad per day). but penis is short and totally couldn't respond with manual stimulation (with both side of never sprated). my husband was joking last night that even with Victoria Secret model stand in front of him, he couldn't do anything. (never had ED issue before surgery). for the first time I can tell that is very mentally challenging.

should my husband call the doctor to get prescription for ED pills now or wait till 7 weeks?

First tell your husband to relax. All of us fellow prostate cancer survivors have been down the same road as he has with the changes related to the surgery. You are still very close to your surgery date. If I remember I started taking the ED pills about 5 days after the cath came out. They don't work magic and take lots of stimulation to get an erection. So be patient, hang in there, enjoy each others company, find new ways to enjoy each other. Stress can quickly kill any beginnings of an erection. Did the Doc not supply you with samples? I would go ahead and ask if you can get some before January.

Ditto....SLOW DOWN.

The ED meds are to be used to help get blood flowing to keep his your know what healthy....Then after a good while you can consider intercourse.

thanks Larry, we didn't get any samples. maybe he will give us when we see him after 4 weeks. maybe we should ask for sample. today is the third week after surgery, 9 days after catheter out.


Steve, we know now is only for blood flow exercise, not for real sex. I guess my husband just want to see he is still capable.

Chances are the pills will make no difference, so there is no harm in waiting.

In the meantime, I suggest hubby starts experimenting with a VED (pump). A cheapie from a sex shop will be fine -- just make sure it has a quick-release valve (most do). Plan on using it just for exercise -- it should help improve the length. If you can make enough happen, then you may be able to use it for sex too.

On your return visit to the doc ask about injections. For me, even with no nerves at all they worked well.

Cleveland Ckinic will give you a script for Viagara at 6 week checkup. Cleveland Clinic does not allow drug reps on site, so they have no free samples.

Richard is correct. The Victoria Secret model most likely could not make anything happen for a while, even wth 100 mg of Viagara. The nerves have been bruised, cut, or damaged in the process. If manual stimulation doesn't do anything, odds are Viagara won't either.

He needs to heal. As things heal, he'll start to see things happen.

So glad to hear of progress in the pads.

Different places apparently prescribe earlier or later. My view -- First things first, let things heal well. The upside potential of starting early is small, the downside risk of causing damage to the healing by starting too early is large.

qjenxu, my doctor started me on ED meds as soon as the cath was removed but with strict instructions to not have intercourse for 6 weeks.

I was told to not even think about getting an erection until 6 weeks after my surgery. The PA said I should not risk damaging the doc's handiwork.
(It has been 4.5 months now and I think about it a lot - to no avail. Oh well...)
