Has any one on the forum had Cyperknife radiation? http://www.cyberknife.com/

Starting my research on the different types of radiation.

Would like to hear others pro/cons

Larry,

My understanding is that cyberknife is a focal therapy used on small identified tumors. I think there are trials going on for use a salvage radiation but it has not been used is this manner and there is very little short or long term data. It has been used successfully for tumors n the brain and liver and just recently for prostate cancer. It is recommended that a 3D mapping biopsy be done to identify the actual tumor.

I think you would be better off with conventional radiation where it can get a large margin as you really don't know where the pc is .

Larry,  The Dattoli Cancer Center has an interesting article titled "Why Would Anyone Choose Cyberknife?".  Try this link;  http://www.dattoli.com/technology/cyberknife.cfm.  Dr. Dattoli is known for performing Tudpock's Brachy and also for performing Dr. Myers' radiation treatment.  Good credentials, no?  Dattoli also provides links wilth info about other radiation treatments.  Good luck.

I called a cyperknife treatment center and they confirmed that they do not use CyperKnife for Salvage treatment. The lady I spoke to wasn't sure why but though perhaps since there is not longer a prostate to 'target' after surgery.

My brother -49 years old, diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer mid April (tumor 2.4 cm in the head of the Pancreas) just completed a 5 day session of CyberKnife in Tulsa Oklahoma on Friday 06.18.10 (tumor had doubled in size). Although it is too early to tell if it will be effective in prolonging his life (since the prognosis is grim) it seems to have helped to decrease the amount of pain he was having. The Dr.'s, Tech's and Staff were absolutely terrific. He had 'seeds' implanted a few weeks before the CK and had the first treatment on 06.14.10. The first treatment was difficult because they had to calibrate, so he had to lie there for over three hours, but each day thereafter was about 1-1/2 hrs. He didn't feel a thing during the procedure. Post procedure he had trouble keeping food down, nausea and was very tired, all normal side effects. He also had a bout with unending hiccups (which had happened before the CK as well).

This past weekend he went to a wedding, another party, went swimming, rode his motorcycle and was feeling a lot better. Originally his doctors had him scheduled for 6 weeks (5 days a week) of traditional radiation with 3 chemo sessions on either end of the process. I don't know the technicalities or the effectiveness of CK at this point (we will find out in a few weeks when they do another scan) but the procedure itself was comfortable and pain free.
