Bike riding with AUS?? Need new saddle?

I know there are some avid bike riders on here or at least there used to be. We bought new bikes last year and really enjoyed recreational riding. Then, with sling surgery and now AUS surgery I am wondering if I can "get back in the saddle". My wife taked to the local bike shop and he recommends a "split" saddle called Hobson Easy Seat II. Has separate seat pads for the sit bones and no nose. Supposed to prevent nerve damage.

Anybody have experience with this saddle/seat that also has a sling and/or AUS.

I began riding my road bike six weeks out of open prostatectomy. Shortly after my surgery, I bought one of those dual pad seats on Ebay. I believe I paid about $40 for it. It has thumb screws so you can adjust the width of the pads. The angle of the pads didn't appear right, so I reversed them, but it was still uncomfortable. It is very cheaply made and now resides on a shelf in my garage. I bought a Bell bicycle seat at Wal Mart that has an open slot in the middle of it so it doesn't put pressure on the perineum. Cost was about $25, and I like it. If you do opt for the dual pad seat, you should ask if you can return it if not satisfied......

Hi TG,

I have the same seat as Sunbird. As comfortable as a bike seat gets but does seem to keep the pressure off.

I got one of these and it was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever used on my bike.  Took it off after a very short ride.  Did a couple of adjustments still was not acceptable.  I looked at the Bell seat at Wal-Mart yesterday.  I think I am going to give it a try.

Hi Tallguy,

In addition to the special seats that are available you can also buy riding shorts that are padded in that area. You might find that with the padded shorts you won't need a special seat at all.

I have an enlarged prostate and bought a Serfas RX on the recomendation of alot of riders. Its seems very good so far. I did buy a pair of padded bike shorts too, the liner style.

I have been riding about 12 - 20 miles a day for a few weeks now. My sit bones are kinda sore but otherwise seems fine ! They  have a 90 return policy too on the seat

I would talk to your doctor to see what he thinks. I would be afrade of doing damage to the cuff portion of the AUS. I know I can feel mine in the perineal area. It seems to me that is where alot of the pressure is on a standard bike seat. You could look a a recumbant bike where you sit higher up on your butt cheeks and hips.

Thanks for all the great response. Looks like I just need to try a couple of things and will heed the advice.

KW, good point about the cuff. I will discuss this with my Doc when I go in for activation and find out exactly where that cuff is. I would not want to take any chance of damaging it......after all it took to get it there.

I waited about 6 months after surgery before I got back in the saddle. I did schedule surgery in November so that helped :-) Ask what your doctor recommends as far as timing. Before surgery I started looking at the same seat you did the Hobson and I also looked at recumbent cycles, much more comfortable seats. I have a Brooks Champion Flier, basically a hard leather seat with some springs. I wear padded shorts for rides over 10 miles and I have had no pain in that area. I wish you luck in your search for a comfortable seat, you don't want to have to give up biking.
