the length of time for davinici surgery

just wondered ,you guys who had davinici how long did the surgery take My wife 's cousin husband had davinici  tuesday at emory in Atlanta and the surgery took 4 hrs, seems like a long time to me . My surgery RP only took 2.5 hrs

I've never had it done, but sure would hope it's done right regardless of how long it takes.

If memory serves correct, I was aware of being in the recovery room about 2:45hours from going in .

My poor husband was in the OR for 5 hours...they wheeled him out of the pre-op/staging area around 4:15 and the surgeon came out to tell me it was over at 9:15 - man, was that a long, long day.

I was in the OR for 4.5 hours, with about a 4 hour surgery due to a blood vessel being in the wrong place. My memory is a blank from 7:30 am (when I was wheeled to the operating room) until 3:15 pm - first thing I remember in the recovery room.

DaVinci takes about twice as long as conventional surgery. 3.5 to 4.5 hours is average. Some surgeons can do it quicker..My surgeon told me they frequently stop the operation while a tissue sample is checked in the pathology lab. This helps them determine just how "radical" the procedure will be but it adds time..

Mine was 2.5 hours, but I wouldn't worry about the time it takes. You want it done right regardless of the time. Pick the rifght sureon and forget about the time in surgury.

My open surgery was 3.75 hours, plus 2 hrs plus in recovery

I was just at 5 hours from being knocked out to the time I was in recovery.

There were some signs of abnormal tissue, so they went overly broad, and that appeared to have added time in the surgery report.

Can't say I noticed the time.

I think you have your answer, 2.5 - 4.5+- hours. Alot of variables. I had tissue from an apendix issue in younger years, and the uro noted that on the report as having complicated matters some. Then i'm sure there are "nerve sparing" issues that might be consideration for a 50 year old that might not be so important for a 78 year old. Enlarged prostate, or not. Age, size, volume of disease, etc, etc.. I imagine there are a number of factors. But luckily (hopefully0 regardless of the total time, there isnt like a parking meter where they just say 'times up" and the surgeon has to stop.. i'm sure he took as long as he needed. And results shouldn't be measured in time. Best of luck to you!

With respect, I'd not agree with Fairwind. If both surgeons have the same experience I believe one of the advantages of da Vinci is that you are under anesthetic for a shorter period of time. From being wheeled into the OR until I woke up in recovery was about two hours. My surgery lasted 70 minutes. Not sure when they start to time, and when they stop the clock, but the official OR report says 70 minutes.

In the end, while it is nice not to be under for any longer than necessary, what is important is the job gets done right.

I dont think Emory has been doing them very long so if a newer surgeon that could increase the time. But other issues can arise that add to the total time spent in surgery. When they did the very first Robotic in Gainesville, Ga 2 years ago it took them 8 hours. Sometimes you do not want to be number one.

Thanks guys ' I just didn't know if a longer time meant something could have been wrong or it just takes along time to do davinici. i'm like most of you I think all that matters is that it is done right and all the cancer is gotten.

The surgeon told me about 4 hours. It took him 3-1/2 hours. The surgeon that did mine has over 1200 procedures under his belt. I think part of it is what they find when they get in there. According to the doctor my took a little longer to sew the uretha back together because the pelvic bone was shaped a bit strange.

What are you guys talking about? It only took about 20 seconds! They wheeled me toward the room and I woke up in recovery. Bam! 30 seconds tops!

Look, I had it done so I know what I'm talking about. I think.

Aparrently I had an abnormal amount of blood vessels in the way which I'm sure too longer then normal to do the surgery...So as usual - we might all have cancer but we're all different.

Mine took over 6 or 7 hours. My blood pressure dropped when I was put under (probably due to 6 weeks of stress leading up to surgery). My doctor only schedules one surgery for the day. I know some doctors do 4 or 5 a day.

My open surgery took 6 hrs because of problems reconnecting the bladder. According to the doc, this was due to irregularities in my anotomy making it hard to get things done properly Squid..

I had the DeVinci and it took less 2.5 hours.

Had mine 7/7/2010...spent 2.5 in the O.R. and about 1.5 in recovery..... my best friend just had his done yesterday.... same surgeon... and it only took him 1 hour 15 min.

Interesting how each surgery is so different...2.5 hours vs. 5 or 6 hours!

When we "booked" the surgery, the urologist said 2 to 3 hours. When we showed up at the hospital, John's OR nurse (who was wonderful) laughed when I told her this. She said "never ask a surgeon how long an operation takes." All they know is their part...they don't factor in the prep time and the close up time which is often done by another doctor. When she told us that the the OR was booked for 6 hours, I almost fainted (John would have fainted if he wasn't laying down!). OR nurses are the unsung heroes in hospitals...the one we had stayed in touch with me throughout the surgery to tell me how John was doing. She told me to go out and have a nice leisurely dinner and that she would call me from the OR about half way through the operation to give me an update. She was truly a compassionate person.

The last thing I remember is looking at the clock and someone saying I might feel a little high, that was 8.30 am exactly. The next time I was awake enough to look at the clock it was 2.30 pm, so I was out for 6 hours. I was not informed as to any complications, so I would assume about 4 to 4.5 hrs on the table.

My urologist said 1 1/2 to 2 hours. After reading all the posts here I am assuming that is his time. I see him next wednesday I'll ask again. I know my wife would panic if I went under at 7 AM as scheduled and wasn't out 2 hours later.

My operation started at 7:30am and I was wheeled to my hospital room at 12:30pm, so backing into it (12:30pm minus 1.5-2hrs in recovery room) I would say my RALP was 3 hours long

My DaVinci surgery took around 6 hours. The surgeon explained that it was due to the large size of my prostate and the difficulty separating it from the bladder.

It took 15 months to regain continence totally pad free. I'm still 100 percent ED but at my age I don't really care. I'm free of pain, feel good and have plenty of energy. That's what is most important to me.
