Oh boy, things are moving. I think today Rex just p-- er, upset all the surgeons.

Stu: "What about removing the prostate Rex? Why don't we just do it?"
Rex: "Because surgery could have UNDESIRABLE results and you need to be prepared to live with them! There is no need to rush this decision Stu. We can think it through!

Jeff Worried Guy: "Um, hey Rex! Do you need any more data? Do you want to retest in 3 or 6 months to get a rate? You're the doc, getting the big bucks. You are in Stu's house now. Grab the prostate by the apex and get down to the nitty gritty.

Clearly this is Rex's first ever patient.

My comment yesterday was very appropriate.

Rex: " In a couple months we'll do another test and talk again about treatment!"
Stu: "It's HARD for me to FORGET I have this cancer growing inside me, Rex!"
Rex:" I know it is! Just try to put it out of your mind...and think positive!"
...
Rex, buttoning up his sport coat like every doctor wears when visiting a patient, "All right... I'll be going then!"
Stu's wife Rose, crying, "Well then...Thank you, Rex! Give my love to June!"

Yeah, it looks like he's explained all the options, consequences, outcomes, etc., just in time for dinner. Time dilation has just become time compression. At least he's not rushing to cut or zap the poor guy in his office. Stu's lucky that Rex is just a humble GP.

Today Stu is anxious; he "can feel this thing growing inside me." I've seen this anxiety in patients I've met -- it's a big reason for them to choose surgery, because of the psychological boost they get by having it "cut out".

Stu: Thanks for coming out tonight, Rex... I owe you! (You'd better believe it!)
Rex: You owe me for the house call, Mr Mayor. That's it. (For 3 hours, his bill is $1,200)
Rex: Now cheer up and go fix things with Rose! She needs you to be positive! (And be sure to empty that prostate as often as possible. Tell Rose I said it is GFMPH.)

Here's the link to last update (8/22) from Rex Morgan (so called) M.D.
8/22 Rex comes home to find June sitting alone on the couch.
Rex: "Where is everybody?"
June: "I waved my magic wand ...and POOF ... they disappeared!"
...
June: "How did it go with Stu and Rose tonight?"
Rex: "Rose was predictably upset that he didn't tell her about the biopsy!"
June: "Now she probably feels awful that she even made it an issue!"
Rex: (Walking June up to the bedroom) "Are you sure there's nobody here?"
June: "Absolutely! We've got the place to ourselves!"
Rex: "Great! Let's go empty this prostate while I've still got it."
(Maybe he only said that last line in my paper.)

Looks like we will have to wait 3 months until the next PSA results come in.
I hope the writers do not miss this chance to educate the public.

I'd like to believe he decided to do a little more research before continuing, after the avalanche of letters he got. Maybe we should send some letters asking how Stu's doing...

YOU GUYS ARE TOO MUCH! They may have removed or radiated the ^%$# out of your prostates, but they totally missed your sense of humor gland.
Makes us want to start getting our local paper again, even after they downsized so much they look more like a pamphlet than a paper. Rex is still making his house calls in it, though...

From a guy who hasn't read a comic in years, I thank you for this thread. Maybe with my new job, new life, new home, I'll have time to buy and read the paper now. I am going to stimulate the national economy because of this whole thread.
But I really appreciate the Reader's Digest version you are offering here. Or maybe it's more like a couple of Sportscasters giving us the play by play - just like the depression era, they huddled around the radio.

Can't believe I missed this thread! I actually sometimes read Rexy, but it's been so long that I missed the entire PC subplot. I do recognize the blond freeloader from a few months back.

zufu's story ideas were terrific. Irving should be diagnosed with PC before Cathy retires.

Oh baby! Like AnoterhDisplayName said Stu received a phone call from a newspaper reporter asking how he was feeling.

If you recall on 8/8 I said:

"I'm betting the story will devolve from PCa soon and into an investigation of how the Mayor's opponent finds out about his PCa. They suspect June, but the leak will be traced to Stu's wife telling one close, well-meaning friend who puts Stu on the "pray list" at church thus informing the whole community.
Stu makes a miraculous recovery but loses the election after being caught having wild sex with a campaign worker half his age. Rose leaves and Stu runs off with the worker."

Let's see how close I am.

what I don't like about the comic strip thread so far is the focus on the
"fear factor" - that is part of the problem since many men are reluctant to have their prostate health checked on a regular basis - due to fear of loss of quality of life - fear of losing spouse - fear of losing job - fear of losing savings due to the high cost of medical care - let alone the fear of losing one's life .....

Yep, looks like Stu might be outed by the reporter.

(Talking on the telephone with Quint the reporter who's phone switches hands faster than a counterfeit bill.)

Quint: "Word on the street is that you are dealing with a HEALTH CRISIS!"
Stu: "What kind of crisis, Quint?"
Quint: "I heard you've been diagnosed...with CANCER!"
Stu : "And WHERE did you hear a thing like that?"
Quint: "I can't say... but it came from someone close to you!"

As if he didn't already have enough on his plate:
- He's just been diagnosed.
- His wife is a nasty, emotional train wreck.
- He is running for re-election
and
- He just found out his health care insurance only covers preexisting conditions.

"Someone close to you..." Jeff, you're psychic. Now he can come clean, be successfully treated, get the public to rally behind him, and win the election by a landslide. All this has to happen by, of course, November 2, so he'd better hustle. We don't know his numbers, of course, so we don't know what his options are. But if his cancer is localized, and (shameless plug here), he lives in a town with a proton center, and they don't have a 4-month waiting list, he can continue on the job, continue all his normal activities, campaign strongly, and whip Quint on the golf course a few times. The image of a tough fighter who wins in the end does wonders in the election booth.

OTOH, let's have a look at the young campaign worker half his age before we commit to Plan A.

Well, since I am clearly a member of wonked winkie class, the only spontaneous enjoyment I can get is, by definition, vicarious. Even if it is animated.
Stu doesn't mind if he loses the election - the erection matters more. That, and faithful Diane's unbridled admiration and adoration. (And the campaign worker's).

Who knew that reading Rex Morgan (so called) M.D. would be GFMPH.

Stu in an apoplectic rage: "You know I'll have your head if you print a word of that!"
Quint the reporter: "I didn't really call to get a story, Stu. I simply wanted you to know what I heard!"
Stu: "OK If you're such a pal... Tell me who your source is!"
Quint: "Well...it's Rose. I've been sleeping with her since the last election... while you were with Diane!" (Or at least that what is says in my paper.)

Finally ! - a positive turn in events in the land of Rex Morgan MD ... the editor of the newspaper is a Prostate Cancer Survivor ....
- maybe someone kicked the artist/writers in their butt !

-mind you , I do like Jeff's little flights of fancy with that extra comics panel he sees in his version of the newspaper ....

I suspect the writer has gotten lots of advice and feedback from the PCa community. This story can go on for a loooong time.

Jeff reads a very good newspaper. Most Sunday comics have a two-panel lead that's dropped by most newspapers, but Jeff's paper apparently keeps not only those, but the very rare "extras" that none of us see. Keep us posted...

I have bookmarked the link to a Seattle newspaper that carries this comix strip - so I can get my Rexy fix while they have this storyline going on - you can even see previous panels - including the sunday editions - enjoy...
