Urinary issues come and go? (before PC diagnosis)

Does anyone have any experience with urinary symptoms that were a direct result of their prostate cancer *before* treatment started or you were diagnosed? I've been on a bit of a roller coaster with urinary urgency and frequency. I suffered much of this spring/summer and had general soreness in the perineum, rectum and testicle area. I switched underwear frequently and could not tolerate pants and underwear that rode up on me. Conditions were worse while I was on Cipro as if Cipro made things more tender. Symptoms got better and virtually disappeared for awhile in late summer/fall. Symptoms returned past few days starting with an an internal hemorrhoid pain and then resulting in some returned discomfort to previously affected areas. It was these sensations that had me getting my PSA checked in the first place and I'd have to say they have come and gone since I was in my late 30s. My question is could PC cause this back and forth? I would think that urinary issues such as these if caused by PC would be consistent if caused by pressure from a tumor. Is that a safe assumption or can urinary symptoms related to PC come and go?

Another interesting note. I started taking Saw Palmetto to see if it alleviated these symptoms and to some extent it did. I only got up 1 time last night to urinate (3am) which is unheard of in the past few years.

clocknut - thanks for the reply. I'm sure symptoms vary from one person to another but I'm holding out hope that I'm dealing with infection or chronic swelling in the area versus actual pc. I've been taking verapmil (for headaches) ever since these symptoms started to come on strong and lipitor for the past few years. I've often thought about stopping both to see if the discomfort clears up. This isn't to say that they'd be the cause of my atypical cells and pin however, something is obviously going on with the prostate itself.
