With me they used marker as well as tattoos, but one of my tattoos was so small that they had trouble finding it so the lines made with marker were also needed to help them find the tattoos.
I thus had something on my skin that looked like this:

They also added a circle as a reference mark for when they did the weekly x-rays.

The lined up my laser to the nearest millimetre, so the tattoos thus also had to be only about 1mm wide, whereas the marker lines were about 4mm wide.

When they did the CT scan they used clear tape to position a very tiny lead ball on the tattoos as that shows up on the CT whereas the tattoos do not.

The marker ink comes off quite easily, so it's a good idea to wear the right colour clothes.
