I am glad I found this site. I am about to start my journey or it has already began. 4 years ago my PSA jumped 3 points and had my first biop 1 year later. Nothing found. PSA has continued to rise 1 point a year, but has gone down every year after 30 days of antibiotic. Now it has actually gone up after the antibiotic.

Now Dr wants to do more intensive biop as an outpatient. I am wondering if this is the only way to detect cancer. I have read some about having MRI, called a MSA, but not enough info.

Anyone had a different detection procedure?

If you read "Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers" by Dr Mark Scholz it outlines several options that are available before a 2nd biopsy should be taken. I believe your doctor is recommending a Mapping biopsy. There are less invasive options like MRIS or Color Doppler to consider before.

Agree with John T. It is most likely a mapping biopsy that is being recommended. I had one before my brachy. It is far more conclusive than a needle biop. and you are 'out', so it isn't painful nor disgusting. I'm not sellin' 'em, just letting you know that is isn't a bad experience, and mine gave a much more complete picture of the magnitude of the disease, thus making the treatment option easier for me.

Nothing more to add about the biopsy just wanted to send you a big welcome. Do keep us posted and feel free to ask any questions. You will find there are guys that are very knowlagable about treatment and discovery of PCa.

Welcome! You are among friends for sure. I would recommed the book "Surviving Prostate Cancer" by Dr. Patrick Walsh. He has been head of urologic surgery at John Hopkins for many years and developed the nerve sparring procedure. He answers all the questions. Best of luck.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

It is a mapping biopsy that I will have done on Thursday Jan 6th.  I did read and discuss with the Dr. about having an MRI done, but he still is convince this is the best alternative for me.  Dr said that for the number of samples taken, should determine if there is cancer and type also.  I really do not have any signs of a problem, except for my PSA going up for the last 4 years.  It is now at a 7.

All my paper work is ready and with this site, I think I am mentally ready to have it done.  I was very nervous when he first suggested having it done, but feel better as I read more from other people having gone thru the same thing.

I guess I will now wait for whatever is the results of the biopsies.

I am home and things went well. No cancer findings - Great news. See him again in 6 months and have PSA done again. Maybe some of these new tests will be available and can start tracking with them.

Thanks to everyone who has posted words of encouragement and thanks for this great forum.

I am going to continue being part of this forum and be there for someone else.
