Here is an update for anyone going down the same road as I. Had a RP on Nov 3rd. Good results on the pathology. Over Christmas I was getting into trouble with poor urine flow and ended up with emergency surgery on Jan 3rd to open my blocked bladder. I thought that would be the end of my troubles but I am now going down the same road again. Things are really slowing up. Went to see my urologist today. I am now booked for a cystoscopy on March 9th to dialate the opening from the bladder and open any strictures. Urologist says a small percentage of patients are like me with repeated problems. He says to wait and see the results of this procedure. I may have to be taught to insert a catheter on my own so I can self dialate.  

Anyone else had a cystoscopy? What were the after effects, if any?

Cystoscopy's are kind of easy. I did one in an office visit.... Then did day surgery so Mr Happy Gas man could put me under.

I had a surgical clip in the bladder that needed to come out.

First couple days after will bring tears to your eyes when you try to pee... But other then that skull

I hate to hear you are going through this. I also had a 9 month ordeal with strictures a month after my Robotic Prostatectomy. Complete blockages on multiple occassions, ER visits, middle of the night surgeries (cystoscopy's under general anesthesia), self cathing which didn't work because I eventually blocked off and couldn't get cath in, suprapubic caths, etc... on and on. Finally the uro group after 5-6 tries said they couldn't fix me. Went to a specialist in Uro reconstructive surgery and he did surgery in August 2008 and I have been urinating fine ever since. He says 5% of men who have prostatectomy can develop stricture and he has been doing a study and will be writing a paper on best way for Urologist to treat it.

Our brother Purgatory on here knows all to well the pain and suffering this complication can put someone through. By the way my 3 year follow up with him is in a week and I just had my 4 year postop PSA and it is ZERO! Not much going on with the ED but love the Trimix!!! tongue   Kbars

Yes, unfortuantely, I am the king of strictures and such, having worn 21 catheters, both foleys and suprapubic, for a total of almost 1 1/2 years of my first 2 years after my open RP surgery. It was a painful and terrible time. I never had to self cath, as my uro said I wasn't a good candidate for it, plus there were lots of complications. Even after having 6 corrective surgeries to fix the problem, it seemed endless. I was said to be in a small pool of 2-4 per cent of men where it becomes chronic.

After I had radiation, the problem was much worse, but I was on a suprapubic by then, and stayed on it for 51 weeks straight until I finally had a surgery for a Urostomy. Now I will pee from a hole in my side into a bag for the rest of my life.

I wish you well, friend, sometimes it only takes 1 or 2 attempts to get it straightened out. Our friend SubicSquid went through a period like ours, but his was resolved, I believe after the 2nd fix.

Its no fun having an emergency dialation done while at pain level 10, or having some half wit in a local ER trying to put a cath into a guy that is already in pain.

Hopefully your twist will be a blip in your past. Keep us posted.

Optimist,  I had several cystos and dilation procedures after my surgery.  The cysto itself was easy but the dilation was a little uncomfortable to say the least.  The pain is short lived but it is a toe curling experience.  I didn't have any after effects.  I suspect that the pain and discomfort you experienced prior to your emergency surgery was far worse than the upcoming procedure.

As David said, after a couple of office scopes and dilation, I had surgery and my problem seems to be fixed.  I guess I am a real wimp because I did not enjoy getting scoped.  The dilation process involves using different sized tools until they get it open, with some nasty "pops" in the process.  I guess just like a biopsy, the sound of the needle being shot is actually worse than any pain.  Hopefully they will find the problem and get you fixed.  Squid.

I had 3 manual and one roto router within 2 yrs of RP.
I had suprapubic in Sept 2010 and Laser in Sept.
Each time I went to ER at local rural hospital, they put me through pure hell trying to catheterize.

I was lucky - I had been in China for 3 wks July and August and that would have been fun there.

Two weeks to AMS 800 woo woo can't wait. Since laser, I have one leaky faucet.

Nice to see another buckeye on here. I live in a small town 28 miles North east of Cincinnati.Right off the 275 outer belt.I have done a lot of work in your area,installing automatic fire sprinklers (unemployed at the moment). May be some day when I'm up that way we can get together and laugh about all this sillyness.
