Does someone have experience dealing with Dr Tiwari of Cornell, NY for prostrate remaval surgery? What heve been your experience, also any good recommendations in the Philly Area?


Age 54 2 out of 12 cores Positive (10%)

he's widely considered one of the best on the planet. You spelled his name wrong though. He's got over 4000 procedures to his name.

well you'll be in great hands and come out of it just fine. I'm 8 weeks out of surgery and EVERYTHING is back to normal.

do you happen to know what your Gleason Score and preliminary staging is at this time?

Gleason score is a 6, 2 out of 12 cores positive 10%, 2 are undetermined, biopsy results obtained mid feb. Semen flow is back to normal after biopsy, in about a month. Thats all I know, what is initial staging?, also one question does the Doctor perform the surgery himself or doeshe delegate to his residents?

Hey Martian,

The question that you ask is not one to ask here. It is a question to ask your potential surgeon. The answer varies. I would ask what portion of the surgery the surgeon will perform. My surgeon told me that he would do the prostate removal, nerve sparing, etc. He lets others make the initial cut and sew up the final incisions. He told me he would be scrubbed up in the operation room the entire time.

Questions like this si one of the reasons why you want to talk to more than one doc.

you need to speak with the doctor but people I know who have used him said he assured them he did everything himself. Again, his reputation is golden. Your situation is very similar to mine, you caught it very early. You're in great hands and will be fine. You just need someone to explain to you the entire process and how quickly you will be back to normal. You're in the worst state of mind right now, things will get better fast.

Martian, Tewari practices in New York City at Columbia Presbeterian / Cornell Weill Medical Center, not in Cornell, NY.

No doubt about his practice, he is among the top 5 (in quantity at least) Robotic prostatectomy surgeons in the country. Some here think that a good thing, others have different opinions.

I would meet with a few doctors before choosing one. My father had Robotic on 1/31/11 with Dr. Ketan Badani out of Columbia. He really liked him and he did the entire surgery. He promised he would. He also met with two other NY doctors and felt most comfortable with him. My father really liked his book Robotic Prostatectomy for Prostate Cancer — Is It For You?, and the book by Dr. Patrick Walsh. You should read those as well. Good luck on your journey!
