Urologist in michigan

My urololgist was recommend by my primary doctor, i have no history with him and don't really know his skill set.   He was ok for monitoring and biopsy's but It's now time for treatment.

Anyone have a recommendation or know a place i can find data on a well experienced surgeon in southeast michigan?

Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Menon. He is extremely well known and many will tell you to go no further.  But, U of Mich. Med Center - Dr. David Wood  is very good as well.

brb, Mel (Compiler) was treated by Dr. Menon and I expect he will weigh in on this thread.

Also, please don't forget to consult an experienced radiation oncologist as well.  You should make sure you have taken a good look at all of your options for treatment before settling on one.

Jim read your Journey, thanks for sharing your encouraging message. Of course i would prefer the least invasive , least life changing remedy. If all else is equal it makes sense. Talked to a relative of mine today who had seeds 10 years ago (before it was cool!) and he has no issues . So i'm seriously checking all options.

So anybody know a good experienced radiation oncologist in Michigan?

Dr. Maha Hussein is a well known oncologist at UMich. She is highly regarded and really is able to look at prostate caner objectively.

I would highly recommend her and UMich.

I did a lot of research when I was dx. I narrowed it down to David Wood and Dr. Menon. I also consulted with Dr. Hussein later on.

I had a day-long appointment at the Umich Comprehensive Cancer Center where I met with Dr. Woods and then Dr. Heemstra (a radiation guy). The next day I met with Dr. Menon and his team at Ford. My wife went with me. We liked Wood. He seemed very confident. But he also seemed a tad distant. He gave us all the time we needed to answer questions. His answers were pointed and succinct. But in between our questions, there was silence.

We liked Menon and his team much better.

Bottom line: I would have been confident with either one.

Menon did my surgery. Unfortunately, my pathology really sucked, but that's not his fault as far as I can tell. The surgery was technically very well done and I had a very quick, full recovery (except for ED).

Also, at Ford Hospital you can rent an apartment 500 feet from the entrance. It was $65 per day but they had a grant that paid $500 towards it, so we stayed there for a week until my catheter was removed. Oh, and they use a s-p catheter which is MUCH better than a Foley catheter.

Dr Martinez in the Detroit area is a pioneer in the HDR brachytherapy. This is the version that does not leave the seeds in you. More accurate and less reduced side effects. I had it performed in Atlanta.

For great details check www.cetmc.com, Dr Jeffrey Demanes the pioneer in HDR (started in 1981). He runs the center at UCLA. His website is great with all the details and comparissoon to surgery and permanent seeds.

I registered with Vattikuti Urology Institute
yesterday and already got an email reply from them and henry ford hospital with general pc info and their credentials. Very impressive 5000 robotic surgeries.

With HDR brachytherapy did you have follow up external radiation?

I had HDR, IMRT and ADT3. But my stats are much worse than yours.

Both Martinez in Michigan and Demanes at UCLA (and my radio-onc in Atlanta) use HDR monotherapy in some cases.

On Demanes website www.cetmc.com he shows a 2005 ASTRO conference presentation showing his 8 year monotherapy survival rate of 96%.

He lists the following as being a good candidate for monotherapy: stage T1c or T2a, G6, and PSA <10. n My rad-onc follows this, and is also guided by the biopsy and the urologist DRE to decide. You look like you fit.

Dr. Alvaro Martinez is in Royal Oak and practices at Beaumont Hospital. Check him out, you are blessed to be so close to a great prostate cancer rad-onc.

We are with Dr. Siddiqi, Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital. Dr. Hugh Solomon is one of the best in the area but very booked up. We love Dr. Siddiqi @ St. Joe's.
