Hot flashes comming off HT

Has any one experienced this? I had pretty sever hot flashes when  I started HT. Then they decreased in severity until they essentially went away in about 4 or 5 months. Now that I am comming off HT, I am starting to experience mild hot flashes again. Is this normal or unusual? BTW I hope you all are enjoying the long week end with friends and family. BB

BB:  Hot flashes have been the single biggest issue with me, I can be sitting talking to someone when a flash comes on and it is visible apparently.  I've had more than one person ask me if I was o.k.  Maybe they were there all of the time but you got used to them and now that you're returning to normal you notice them more. 

What did Myer's have to say, anything new on the horizon.

I would say…YES it is normal.

Hot flashes are part of the menopause-like symptoms caused from the low level of testosterone in our body. The drug effectiveness may end after its half-life period but the return to normalcy in terms of testosterone levels can take two or more months (some cases one year) since the end of drug’s effectiveness.

Expect those side effects to continue for a long period of time at any time.

BB, I had the same experience as you. I have been off of hormones for over a year now and will still get a hot flash occasionally. Not as severe as with the hormone and does not last as long. Mostly in the morning just before waking.

yes. expect SEs months after the last shot expires.

Only had one shot of Lupron and the only time I experienced HOT flashes was after I was in bed for the night. None of the flashes were really that bad but I did have to kick the covers off to be even close to being comfortable. Those flashes lasted about eight or nine months after receiving that single Lupron shot. Up to the time of that shot, I had not been getting sweaty even when working outside since the humidity is normally around 10% or so here in Southern Colorado. Now, this Summer, for the first time, I am getting a little sweaty under the arms with just a little bit of exertion. Dang Lupron (but it apparently did the intended job)

Thanks for the reponses guys. Spent the day on the beach. Relaxing with family.

Dave, Appt with Dr Myer went well. He was very happy with my reponse to ADT3. Although, unfortunately, I think that he believes that I am not cured by SRT. We talk about PSA maintenance through diet and suppliments and plan for the day of recurrence. He said that I'll be taking a trip to Sand Lake if necessary. He does believe that a cure may still be possible if we can isolate the PCa in the lympnodes and hit it with radiatation. It's good to know that I have a plan in place.

I too experienced this. Hot flashes about drove me crazy. I finally got relief from acupuncture of all things. I was a huge skeptic but finally decided why not and to my surprise it worked great. Now I have been off of ADT3 for nearly two years and all hot flashes are long gone.

BB:  Did you have full pelvic radiation or prostate bed only.  What's Sand Lake and what do they do to you there.  Hang you by your toes and beat you with a rubber hose until you agree you won't be bad anymore ?

Dale:  I was offered accupuncture and turned it down, you just never know what may work.  I wish I had tried it now.

Hot flashes aren't a real problem. I am just surprised that they are recurring now as I go off HT. I didn't have radiation of the full pelvic area, just prostate bed. They didn't hit the pelvic lymph nodes. I wish I pushed the issue at th time. Sand Lake Fl is an imaging facility that has a new process that can detect very small PCa tumors in the lymph nodes. Others at HW have mentioned this facility in the past.

i had three 3-month shots of luprons.  i didn't get hot flashes until maybe a month or so into the last shot and the hot flashes lasted well past the 3-month duration of the shot.

can you clarify:  "I am just surprised that they are recurring now as I go off HT."

I had pretty severe hot flashes when aI started HT. After 4 or 5 months they disapated, going away for the last 4 or 5 months of HT. As I am going of of HT now, HT flashes are beginninb to recur. Very strange.

BB -- i don't think it's that strange.  be thankful that you had a break from hot flashes.  when did you have your last shot and what was the duration?

Eight months after last Lupron shot. Testosteron is low normal. Still get a flush now and then, but gets to be farther in between and lower intensity. I figure it is a function of the T numbers.

Wow! I think the hot flashes now are because I am no longer using estrogen patchs. Dr Myer had me on them to support bone density while I was on HT. Last week he told me to discontinue them now that I have stopped HT. I think that they may have also been suppressing the hot flashes.

BB_Fan estrogenic drugs can cancel side effects of Lupron or casodex, the hot flashes and sweats can be cancelled, also helps with bone density and keeps your memory in tact...but sadly (LOL) no big profits to be made. Hey I like Dr. Myers and his PCRI videos are very interesting and a learning experience....

My heavy sweats and hot flashes gone fast with estrogenic drug introduced, Lupron was still in me for another month of use or so, within 1-2 weeks cancelled the junk side effects and alot more.

Would you comment on what estrogenic drugs are available, and do you mean over the counter or by prescription?

And is Genistein considered an estrogenic drug?

about the hot flashes, they were pretty bothersome when I first went on Lupron about two years ago. Many times I would wake up with heavy sweats. Now those effects are mostly gone, though I still notice from time to time a slight increase in body temperature for no good reason. Have a visit with the oncologist tomorrow and the plan is that I will be given a three-month injection of Lupron, and that will be the last one for at least a year, by which time my PSA readings should not be influenced any more by HT.
