Receiving PSA results.

I had my 2 year PSA drawn on Thursday, 5 days ago. I have my two year appointment with my Uro in 2 weeks, but I already know my results. Why?

Because I insisted that the requesting doctor put my name and "(pt)" in the second cc box on the request form. Today, I received, in the mail, the full report "Total PSA, protocol (eff 4-2010), performed by Roche Cobas 601 electrochemiluminescence ECLIA."

Additionally, my GP has Web-enabled our medical records through the Eclincalweb Patient Portal. I put in my user name and password and all my records are available to me, including all my PSA results - even the ones where I was a study participant.

Guys, Instead of suffering mental anguish every 6 months waiting for your PSA result, wasting time driving to the office, or calling and worrying about whether or not the receptionist knows the difference between <, =, or >, insist that your doctor "Get with the program". It is 2011! It's time to move out of the stone age. Ask if the office is Web Enabled. If enough people ask for it, it will happen. W.E. saves money, time, and needless worry. If your doc's office is not current with this technology can you be certain they are current in anything?

If for some reason they don't have the capability then ABSOLUTELY insist on having the report sent to your home.

Oh, by the way, it was <0.01 ng/mL. Drinks all around.

The point of my thread was actually the push for ALL OF US to get our PSA results sent directly to our homes rather than being at the mercy of a doctor's golf schedule or a receptionist's 8th grade math performance.

Maybe some docs who aren't busy want to force you to come into their office so they can charge for an office visit. But the busy, successful, competent, ones on top of the technology and their game will gladly give you the capability - if you ask for it. Please do so.

We all need to have our PSAs checked again within 6 months. Make sure to ask. And, like Karl Malden used to say: "Don't leave their office without it."


Bronson, You bring up a good point. When I was going to the office every day both my PSA and the local rodent population, 23 and 100000 respectively, were at their peaks. After the surgery and with me spending more time at home, my PSA and the rodent population, 0.01 and 0, are at their nadirs. Coincidence or a significant correlation? Clearly an NIH study grant is in order.

I'm in British Columbia and we have our test results online within 24 hours, so when the uro calls 3 or 4 days later, it's old news. This past time (1 year results) no uro phone call. Is this the down side of online results? It's not like I'm going to call him and say the results were .01, whatdya think? Granted he could be on vacation or something, or he doesn't want to hear me complain about my 5 daily pads. I love getting the results in 24 hours, but if there's no contact with the uro until things blow up, that's a bad thing im my opinion.

2 year mark is an important one for sure.

My guess is that you are cured with that low

of a PSA at 2 years.
