Best places to purchase supplements/vitamins

OK -- Dr. Scholz did gave me a list of suggested supplements//vitamins.

I went to Sam's Club today and figured on doing some purchasing. Well, some of the items they didn't have. Other items were there but in some cases the quantities were too large (eg: a 3-year supply, with the expiration date being in 2 years).

In some other cases, they had two of the substances in one pill and the amounts were not good.

OK, is there some place where I can shop and get this at reasonable prices. I'm sure there are plenty of online sites, so maybe someone has some recommendations?

It kinda depends on what vitamins/supplements you need.  Costco and Trader Joe have good prices, but the quantities at Costco may be like Sam's Club.  You'll probably have to get the some supplements at a specialty vitamin store or online.

Mel, we buy alot of our vitamins online at Vitacost.com. They have their own brand plus many of the "known" brands. You can view the ingredients for each item to help decide the best product for your needs.

I get all the suppliments on-line at life extension. I don't know how competative the pricing is. But I am more concerned about the quality. Dr Myer recommends some of their products. They will give you quantity discounts for amounts that are not outrageous. Mel, would you mind sharing the vit/suppilment recommendations?

I get a lot of my stuff via internet at Swanson vitamins.They have a big selection and some prices are reasonable.

If you have a "Vitamin Store" near you they are very reliable and cheap. Next would be "Swansons" those two have been mentioned already. I use Vitamin Shoppe.com very good prices and their name brand is good stuff and very cheap, most anything there about 40% off retail prices.
Best bet is shop around.

BUT....I thnk this thread violates what I was reading yesterday on here about recommending where to buy things......the thread I refer to was in regards to out of country, but if the rules are used for that then same applies here........thin ice...

I just posted the doctor's recs. as a new thread.

Does anyone know where to get the POM-Wonderful capsules? Is this available in stores or do I have to get this directly from the company?

I'll be checking out the sites mentioned.

i get POMx direct from POM.  they are mailed every 90 days and payment is automatically deducted from my visa card.

Oooops, I had the wrong name posted for a place I use now and then. Not the cheapest, but it's easy for me to get to and they normally have what I want.

you can get pomegranite and all the others at Life Extension. I know their quality is good because both Myers and Strum recommend them.
Don't go crazy on the pills; it would be a shame to be a PC survivor and die choking on a pill.

Have always believed that you get what you pay for and LifeExtension seems to have a superior quality standard according to my research. Just an opinion as I take their Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA Sesame Lignans & Olive Fruit Extract twice a day. In essence, fish oil with 2 kickers. But then again, I take other things like pomegranite as well as eating 2 TBS+ of asparagus twice a day.

I'm just glad that I never went to Walmart for any PC treatment. Vitamins may be an aid to some PC folk and quality is a concern just as if one had HT injections or oral scripts.

Sorry, Mel, I deleted my post to your thread. I gave you a very simple suggestion to your question, and one of our posters decided to target my post and try to make me look bad. Decided not to take the bait this time. You can tell from his response, what I posted to you. It was just an honest suggestion.

The problem is finding this stuff.

I bought the Vit. D3 recommended 2000 IU capsules.

But now all the calcium citrate capsules also contain Vit D!!

I can't find pom pills and circumin.

So, time to look at a suitable online place. I'll try Life Extension.

David, at this stage I don't mind paying a bit more. In fact, I just forked over some $$ at my gym club to work with a trainer as the HT will require a much more rigorous weight program.

My own GP of some 18 years, suggested that I buy the Vit-D that he has me on daily now from Wal-mart, he said there was no reason to pay high prices for it. My uro had me buy the Cranberry Juice pills that I take for my Urostomy also from Wal-mart.
Obviously, Wal-mart doesn't manufactur vitamins, so it would be intersting to know who really makes them. Again, it was just a suggestion like the other posters. Good luck on what you are doing. Hope it helps. I noticed on your list, not to take multi-vitamins, that's the same advice that all 3 of my doctors said on their own.

Not even close. Yesterdays discussion was about not sharing websites dedicated to providing a means to illegally obtain counterfeit prescription drugs. Vitamins and such are legal here and they are not to my knowledge illegal to import.

When it comes to vitamins and nutrition supplements, you often don't get what you pay for. According to Consumer Lab, which tests supplements for quality (purity and potency), some of the high-priced brands are not as good as the low-priced ones.

I buy vitamins from Costco when possible, because the price is low and many of their vitamins are tested for purity and potency by USP (United States Pharmacopiea), which is a gold standard testing organization. Most vitamin manufacturers, do not have the USP seal on their products.

Vitamins and nutrition supplements are not regulated, as are prescription meds, by the FDA, so the quality is all over the map. And it's a multibillion dollar industry. Buyer beware.

A later findings on Vit D is that it should be taken with Vit K to stabilise it and reduce the risk of plaque formation

Also have a look at newer developments in Anti-Oxidants.. Recognise that vegies/fruits with the strongest colors, have the stronger anti-oxidants.. eg.. Curcumin

Thanks for your responses. I checked out some of the sites. Life-Extension seemed very expensive and again did not have just the calcium citrate (it came with Vit. D).

I ended up ordering stuff from Swnason's Vitamins. They had a powdered pure calcium citrate.

I will order the pom capsules from Pom-Wonderful. That is much more expensive, but it is the only brand name that Scholz mentioned.

will they also send the pills automatically to your home every 90 days and automatically charge your credit card?  i pay $28 a month for my pills plus that service.  one less thing to worry about is surely worth more than a couple of bucks.....well it is to me at least cool .

I might look at the Medit. Diet.

Mel -- i don't think i can do vegan either but i have improved my diet quite a bit via weight watchers.  i really don't normally eat too badly but i went crazy on lupron so for me the accountability of weight watchers will help me stay on track.  i have also added fish oil and lycopene to my daily supplement intake based on your visit with Dr. Scholz.  thanks for that and good luck.
