Sherry Galloway is a friend of mine that I have met through Zero-The Project to End Prostate Cancer. A couple years ago my story, along with her son's story, were featured by Zero in publications to the federal government to seek funding for prostate cancer research. Last September, Sherry (her son died at the age of 36), David Emerson (metastatic disease at 42) and I (Advanced prostate cancer at 44) stood together in the lobby effort on Capital Hill. That was a very sad piece, and seeing Jeremy just laying on the bed with his dog was extremely sad. I wonder at what age the cancer started?

When my dad died of prostate cancer, the year after I went to get tested at age 37 and every year get tested. Our family physician at the time (not my current doctor) said I didn't need to be tested until 50! He knew of the family history too.

Sad story, I'm sorry to see this happened to such a young guy too.

Jeremy started having symptoms at the age of 34. He was misdiagnosed and prostate cancer was not suspected until he had just turned 35. Even then his doctor was shocked. His very first bone scan at that age was black up and down his skeletal bones. Very consistent with advanced metastatic prostate cancer. He died a year later.

Sherry is a very active speaker and as you see a very powerful story.

Very moving story. Hope this is not the start of a trend for the average age for PCa coming down even more.
Interesting to hear that he was a Vegan too. So I doubt red meat contributed to his problems.

So sorry, so sad. Why do we agree to be silenced by "authorities" on testing and research? Nothing is changing.

It is a heart-breaking story. But someone with aggressive prostate cancer at 34 probably would likely need to have had it caught in his late 20s to have made any real difference. Sometimes we just get dealt a real lousy hand. It seems that more testing should have been done on this particular case, but I just wonder if the end result will be positive if we start subjecting mass amounts of men in their 30s to PSAs and ultimately biopsies. I do agree that research is incredibly lacking compared to other illnesses.

Thank you for sharing that. It is terribly sad and my heart aches for her and her loved one. Being one of those families touched by Prostate Cancer before 40, it is so important to get the word out. I think as a society we are just in denial, the more we can get out and spread the word, the better off we will all be.

Thank you for helping to spread the word - as most of you know, I am a big advocate for screening, even if you have to pay for it. 

My husband had ZERO symptoms and was diagnosed at 44 - this is no longer "an older man's" disease.  My children will be tested for baseline at 25 years of age.

I did a double-take when I saw the URL that included WHNT since that station is here in Huntsville. Sometimes the stories are close to home. So much for PCa being the "Old Man's Disease.

An amazing story, Tony, but so very, very sad. Tell this story to those trying to eliminate or reduce PSA testing at any age.
I feel so bad for his family. My oldest son is 34 and the story hit close to home. Thanks for sharing.

Tony, this is such a moving story and I feel as David does.  My son will be 40 next year, and he's been smoking for 25 years.  I am so concerned as he has no medical insurance.

After seeing how many young guys in their 40s have PCa, I will make sure my son does get tested.  Regardless of their age, they will always be our child.  Thank you for sharing.
