Anyone had a spine fusion?

I will be going in for prostate surgery. One concern is I had l5-s1 fused a couple years ago. I'm worried if surgery will cause issues.

Hello Mark,   You are not alone, seems like this brotherhood has a great breadth of experience and encouragement to share.   I had spinal fusion of L4-L5 about 5 years ago. That delivered great results . I recently had DaVinci in July of this year without any back or nerve issues whatsoever.   Ortho surgeon said the best way to prevent recurring spinal problems was exercising to maintain my "core strength".

Mark,   Not hindered at all. I took on a 12 month + remodeling project on my daughter's home, no limitations, nothing I couldn't do, including heavy lifting.  Important to note that my spinal surgery was laparoscopic - still amazed that they got a carbon cage and screws through two small holes. I find the jarring of running unpleasant, but a treadmill and elliptical machines are no problem.   Good luck on your surgery, make sure you ask the doctor all of your questions. If you have concerns, let him know.

I have had 3 back operations, the last one in 1994 which was fusion of S1 L5 L4, with screws and rods into spine, have had no problems with my Radical Prostectomy , just told them about the back before the operation.

Tom,

I had the fusion because the disk between L4 & L5 slipped out and down pinching the nerve. Got to a point that I could not walk or put on my own socks. When they removed the disk and did the fusion, I went from agony to pain free.

Not at all related to PC

Mark, my surgeon told me he was happy that I told him about my back, because apparently they bend you right back to get better access to the area.

Hi I'm a new member this is my first post can I ask why you guys have had you spine fused?
Is it because of osteoarthritis & nothing to do with PC as I have had a bad back for years

But I put this down to hard work & lifting as I'm a farmer at Tenterfield NSW Australia.

I had mine 19 months ago do to degenerative disc. I was active and remodeling homes. Now it looks like I'll have prostate surgery too. It is comforting to know others have been in similar shoes and back doing the same thing. My back is still a little fragile, but every month it seems to get better. I find this board invaluable.
