First thing is to be sure you call your uro/surgeon with any questions - they should be there for you, especially just after surgery. This is not the time to "man-up and bear it".
I didn't have a lot of issues at night, but as soon as I stood up, I emptied. There was no "making it to the can", so I kept a bucket by the bed, just in case. I had no feeling of holding anything during the day (and that was because it was all draining - I was at 8 or more pads per day as boosters for a depends pant.
Be sure you are walking at least a little, several times a day, and that you get in a couple of sets of Kegels after each walk. I found that spreading both over the day worked best.
Also, you'll probably find (I did, and others have reported the same) that soon after you've emptied the bladder, you feel you need to go again. My uro says that it is the bladder reacting to the first bit of urine that comes in. That was the point at which I backed off on all the known bladder irritants. He also had me drink more water (seems contradictory, but more water means less intense urine, so less irritation).
It will get better with time. I understand the soggy feeling all too well.
