edited in hopes of getting a response:
Doc 2 - wants ANOTHER bone biopsy (the surgery kind). Is hoping that comes back benign, and if so, recommends a clinical trial. He is encouraging a clinicial trial with neo-adjuvant docetaxel AND ADT prior to radical prostatectomy vs JUST radical prostectomy.
The second bone biopsy is to conclusively determine whether the spots in his arm are/are NOT bone mets. This is necessary to qualify my dad for the trial as its only for high risk, clinicially localized patients.
hotpink2,
Sorry your father is joining our rank and hope his treatment, whatever he chooses, is successful.
You do want to educate yourself and ask the rationale of the clinical trial and whether there are cases indicating neo-adjuvant treatment is helpful, and as Medved suggested what would Dr. #2 recommend besides the trial. Perhaps a third opinion would also be appropriate.
Ever since my diagnosis, I always wondered why in prostate cancer the treatments seemed to be conservative in comparison to other cancers (breast cancer for example). I am very happy to see a clinical trial using what most doctors considered unnecessary aggressive protocol: Chemo + ADT + surgery (or radiation) for an early stage aggressive cancer. Would I like to be in the trial if my case were early-aggressive? Probably since BCR is common for aggressive G8 cases.
