Returning to work after radiation BUT still msierable side effects happening to me! HELP!

four weeks after radiation therapy.  still having sleepless nights and up four/five times bursting to go to toilet only not being able to go except for the leak between going from the bed to the bathroom.  Also my bowels cod me very often too and when i least expect it it's not wind i am expressing but a complete outburst.......  Now my problem is that my consultant states i am fit to return to work after the radiation and that these other issues will go in time.  i work in a glass factory where work is heavy, hard and constant and very little leeway to be running to the toilet, etc.  i am not confident to return to work but i knwo i will ahve to if i cant get medical certs to remain on illness benefit for antoher while.  has anybody in Ireland with similar complaint any advice on how i should respond.  Do i go with the doctors recommendation or with my own at this stage.

Oh, man, I sympathize with you. That is a tough and miserable situation.

Isn't there some way you can talk your doctor into giving you more medical leave? I suppose that would be admitting that patients do have SE that go on for awhile.

I can understand very well how you feel about this situation. I faced the same during the radiation therapy and the medical sanitary commitee gave me an extension of medical leave for 6 months. When I returned to work in 10/2010 I had the same but less intense problem till 5/2011. The doctor gave me a therapy which I strictly followed and I also had to convince myself that everything will pass asap.It was a period with the strongest feelings of anxiety on a 24 hrs basis. Now all is OK. Hope you overcome it asap.

What type of radiation treatment did you have? What were you stats going into the treatment? Did you have any urinary problems before the treatment?

Maybe you could go to another doctor and a second opinion. With what you are experiencing, I don't see how you could work. If you have to, would pads help?

CJD, You did not mention if you are on flomax. That helped me at night. My "wind" did go away after about 1 week post radiation.

You don't mention what time radiation you had and each one can have longer lasting effects, so I have heard>

i too, can sympathize for your current isses. been there, done that. for most after radiation, these type of symptons fortunately subside over time. For a smaller pecentage, however, they can become chronic, hoping that won't be the case for you.

Can't help with your problem but I see that you are located in Ireland. I know there is a rather renowned large glass factory in Eire, (Antrim, I believe). Is that where you work?

I would recommend you go with your doctors advice, maybe you may need to consult a specialist to be able to help you more with your unstable condition.

NO BILLY, the other enc of the country.  Don't know the one in antrim you talking about but i work in Tarylormade Ltd, a subsidiary of Taylormade US, glass for boats, etc.  just after seeing your message there today.  I'm afraid im bettter aat glass than computer. lol

Not a whole lot of information, other then work issues, here for anyone to provide any advice. As someone suggested, there's meds out there like flomax etc that I'm sure your OCO or URO should have prescribed.

In addition to flowmax, as your doctor about ditropan. It may help a lot with those nighttime urges.

I was on Flomas and that regulated the frequency. I completely avoided caffine, acidic beverages like orange juice, and carbonated beverages (well an occasional beer, I had). I basically limited myself to water and green tea and drank nothing after 8:00 pm. All this worked well.

As for the bowels, I kept my diet going but it included very little meat. Most of my protien came from fish and seafood. I also cut back on the fats and oils. My doc said to keep a pack of Imodium D with me. I did but never had to use it. All of this "passed" within about four weeks of the end of radiation.

I think some regular exercise helps as well and can be as simple as a good 30 minute walk each evening.
