Chemotherapy after Radioterapy for hormone resistant metastasic cancer

My name is Regina, my father is in mexico and he got diagnosed with cancer in a very advanced stage since march last year, they tolg him his gleason was 8 and his psa was in 49 that to .02 and then now is in 4....
We received radiotherapy for couple of months and was feeling better because he got metastasis
so we were waiting for the X rays to see the progress but then when the psa show that the levels were going up again and the hormons were not working they start considering other options.,,,
my father is hiding things from me thingking i am going to stress to much and maybe i am going to have some convulsions because i suffer some a couple of months ago becuase i am epileptic...
so he is trying to keep me away from any stress...
i am not reacting to his thing as he thingk the convulsions were cause by a car acident that happened and he is more stressed that i am ...
and he is not helping himself out in this sittuation...
I am feeling useful i am feeling helpless and i have not all the information that i need to do my best to do a proper research and take the best decision
i think the decision is not mine and my father already took it so i just hope that is something i can do to help him to make a better one a correct one or to get more information of other options that he can consider. He is also trying natural things flora essence, larrimsh, some other things and his catholics prayers with my muslim duahss...

Thankyou, and yes, here in Mexico we have amaizing Doctors and i am trying to get in touch with one of them.
My father has 60 year old and is strong God willing everything will go in a better direction and the cancer will stop spreading...

Sometimes the disease will metastasize to the bones and is called advanced prostate cancer with bone metastasis. Bone metastasis can occur during hormone therapy treatment but may not be apparent without a bone scan. Chemotherapy can be used to treat the cells in the bones that are now dividing malignantly. The pain associated with bone metastasis can be greatly relieved by the use of chemotherapy drugs. External radiation therapy is also sometimes used in conjunction with chemotherapy as a way to alleviate pain associated with advanced prostate cancer.

Recently, however, with the creation and of new and more effective chemotherapy drugs, some doctors are putting their patients on chemotherapy drugs before these patients stop responding to hormone therapy. In some individuals, the earlier use of chemotherapy has been helpful in slowing the advancement of the disease. As of now, there are no studies that prove that starting chemotherapy earlier is better though some patients have benefited from an early uptake.

Some common chemotherapy drugs used as an advanced prostate cancer treatment include:

Mitozantrone is an antineoplastic or anti-tumor antibiotic that is often used with the steroid prednisone for patients who are in pain due to bone metastasis.

Doxorubicin is an anti-tumor antibiotic which damages the nuclei of cells and is derived from a bacterium Streptomyces Peuceticus.

Vinblastine is an antineoplastic which disrupts cell division and is derived from the Madagascar periwinkle.

Pa***axel is a member of the taxane group which works by locking the microtubules of cells and causing the cell to crumble during division.

Docetaxel is another member of the taxane group which originates in the bark of the Pacific Yew tree and is difficult synthesize in a laboratory.

Estramustine Phosphate is an alkylating agent which damages the DNA of cells and lowers the testosterone produced by the body.

Etoposide works by inhibiting the process of metosis in cancerous cells.

Dear Regina, some have used chemotherapy with great success, for example Dr.Lee who has used medication Emcyt for many years to keep his cancer in check. Again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to find a doctor who has experience in this, and is also at the top of his game when it comes to treating advanced PC. Good luck.

regina  there is much treatment before chemo

the best advice is to see an oncologist- they are cancer experts and have more options than an urologist

one example is a treatment called provenge-- it is the ist fda approved treatment in usa for advanced pc that uses your immune system to treat pc- check out the website (it just got accepted by medicare)

there are many trials available before chemo--another one is large doses of metaformin(used to treat diabetes) studies show that a reduction in sugar levels help fight pc

regina like your dad i first received radiation for pc because at age 49 it was locally advanced.

now that the cancer is very aggresive i probably will take provenge before chemo. it's not a curative treatment but i am hoping for the best. and i'm in my fifteenth year with advanced pc.

i hope your dad opens up to your family and discusses his issues. one advanced patient taking provenge lived 9 years. i also have a friend whose pc cancer metastisized and is now going on his 20th year living with pc.

pc is like no other cancer. it is not like breast or colon cancer where similiar patients have the same prognosis. it is truly a homogeneous cancer. everyone reacts differently. some patients with good numbers do poorly and some patients with bad numbers do well.

you and your dad are in my prayers. i hope that he opens up to you. it is extremely important.  i have 4 kids and all have been kept abreast of my cancer.  and at that time 15 years ago, as hard as it was, i told my youngest of 9 years about my situation. my wife and children have handled the crisis very well.
