Waited until 30 day PSA result to reply. Age 64. I had NanoKnife procedure at University of Miami Sylvester Compreshensive Cancer Clinic on 7 June. CT scan next AM indicated success, and PSA result from 30 (9 July) days shows a prior to procedure PSA of 6.0 is now 2.5. As far as i know, I was the first prostate treated in US, although it has been used in Italy and elsewhere before. Dr. Narayanan at Sylvester has used procedure on liver and other organs previously, and NanoKnife supposedly will work on small lesion lung, pancreas and other organs.
My first urologist gave me two options- radiate the prostate to death or cut it out with (his) conventional surgery. He also is a part owner of the radiation facility. Thank God for the internet. Lengthy research found NanoKnife (irreversible electroporation) made by Angiodynamics, a NY company. Even then it was a struggle to find a facility to do the procedure.
There was no bleeding, no bandage after first day, catheter removed early next AM, no pain, and most important, no impotence or incontinence. The prostate is left intact minus the cancer cells. I was diagnosed last August, and have been living with this worry since, but have to say the wait and research were worth it. Hate to use the term "cured" but all indications are positive at this point. I never had chemo, hormones, radiation, etc. and as previously stated, all the "plumbing" still works as before.
This may not be for everyone, but I strongly recommend anyone with prostate or any other cancer do some research on the NanoKnife procedure. Most doctors are not even aware of it. To me, this has been a classic example of the only one looking out for your best interest, is you.
I highly recommend Dr. Narayanan and staff at U Miami Sylvester, and to my knowledge procedure might also be available at Baptist Hospital Little Rock, U Florida Shands Hospital, a clinic in Georgia, and maybe a few other locations in US.
