I talked my wife into buying our first computer many years ago by promising her I would write a novel, or maybe one of the romance novels she likes to read, if we bought the computer.

I actually wrote a first chapter, but soon found that writing a book of that length is a lot of work, so I gave up.  But.....I got the computer, so that was good.

Thanks, one and all, was just nice to reported something good going on for a change.

For those that asked, the other 2 published books were Crystal Dreams, and Burning Ice. I know they are still
available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon for sure.

We are all different, I cant write short stuff, only long stuff. Takes a different kind of drive to do a 80-150K word novel, but I find it easier than trying to write a short story. And all writer's have their own methods and style. I never do re-writes, ever. Not counting grammatical or spelling errors, what I write the first time, is exactly how I want it to be. I read of writers that labor an entire week over getting a single paragraph just right. Me, I let it fly out of my head and heart, and that's that. No right or wrong there, it's whatever works. Also, when I write, I get real OCD about a particular session. Once I start, I don't stop until I have completed usually an entire chapter, or in words, some 3,500 to 6,000 words. I break a book down into chapters, and treat each one as a seperate unit. Again, no right or wrong, just a question of personal style.

I usually have 3-4 books ideas floating around in my head at any time, now, with this one soon to be published, may just have to crank up the imagination a notch and get busy on something new. If nothing else, its a good distraction.

Somehow, I'm not surprised that you are a writer. Congratulations on getting another one published.

I too, write for a small portion of my living - my second job. I write a regular column for a small quarterly hobby magazine. The articles are about 3000 words, but I also include mechanical drawings, electrical schematics and photographs of the projects I present. I am approaching 30 articles in print. Working to a quarterly deadline was a challenge when PC jumped into the middle of my life, but I was able to get the last two articles completed before my editor got too anxious.
I have written several short stories (all unpublished) and am working on a science fiction novel in my "spare" time.

whitebird, you are definitely a writer too, and it sounds like, some of you other's have at least entertained or contemplated writing something serious. even with the start of a long novel, you just have to sit there, and get off the first sentence. then the first paragraph, the first page, first chapter, etc. before you know it, you got a book.

my creative writing started in the first grade at age six. i came up with the idea of our school having its first student newspaper, and thus became the editor. later in life, i was the editor of a monthly religious/historic magazine for about 5 years, "The Reformed Digest". Also had a couple of book reviews published in a national magazine. but, just a simple novelist at heart. if you got the right idea in your heart, the rest of getting it down is just mechanics. a good book will write itself, in my opinion.

No penatly, no foul there. No matter how many times a long piece is looked at, you can always find something to correct. With most of my books, I usually have 3-4 test readers, that are reading my work as it is in process. I do it for marketing reasons, to see if I am hitting my intended target. Sometimes, they will spot some obvious error that I missed, so it helps.

For some of you that have expressed interest in wanting to write that "great novel", my only real advice, if you don't know how to type properly, go ahead and take typing classes. If you type well and fast, it takes the drudgery out of writing. If you are one of those "hunt and pecks" kind of typists, it will become more work than fun. I had 2 years of typing in high school (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), and then typing school in the Navy. If I am in the right mood, I can still type accurately well above 100 wpm, and that makes my writing go much faster.

thanks, ziggy. actually, i wrote it a movie in mind. the book is based in part on the old colonial house we use to own in NH years go, it was built in 1765, and had quite a local haunted history at the time I purchased it. house had been on the market for 4 full years when i looked at it, and according to the realtor, i was the only person that would step inside the house. to me, it was the real estate deal of the century.
