Radiation and the Catheter

My husband just completed 42 treatments of radiation. He has had
a bag for 5 weeks and has 2 more to go. What should we expect? Is there
anybody with this experience?

    Sorry to hear it has been so long.  I had mine 23 days after RRP.  I can feel some of your frustrations.

Dear fralink34, I had 43 radiation treatments and no catheter. I suggest that you ask your doctor.

Some radiation patients will develop urinary retention and that may be treated with a catheter and a bag. Perhaps that happened with your husband. Definitely ask why your husband had to have a bag, and you might inquire as to why you weren't told the reason at the time.  

When you get an answer, I hope you will feel comfortable sharing it with us. You'll find a lot of sharing. Indeed, sharing can be a comfort but only if you're comfortable doing so.

Although your post was several years ago we are grateful to read someone else actually had radiation with a catheter in place. My husband had severe urine retention and was in agony. The catheter was a great relief, and now after a two week hiatus they are going to resume the last 15 external beam radiation treatments with it in.  Our oncologist admitted he was not certain about it either and was on line and consulting with others in the hospital about it. Thank you, hope you are doing well.
