My 5k Run this weekend.

This weekend I ran in the American Cancer Society's Run For Dad, a fundraiser for prostate cancer research and education. 

 

The event was a huge success with over 500 runners.  It was a beautiful day for a run.  As one of the announcers said, “ Perfect weather, the sun didn’t come out from behind the clouds until after we finished”.  (How often have you heard that said)?  The park itself is beautiful, and the course was through the trees, on both paved and unpaved roads, and down beside the lake.

 

I finished a little better than expected, not quite a personal best, but a respectable 31:40.  I was happy with the time.

 

One observation…  The event organizer announced that we had the largest turnout of Prostate Cancer Survivors ever.  Not sure what to think of this, is it a negative that so many men are getting this diagnosis, or a good thing that so many of us are getting diagnosed early, so that we can make this full recovery? Something to think about.

 

 

Good for you Rich, and good to know we can still do things like a 5k after al that we have been through.

Tenpin, I’m always glad to hear about a fellow “ PC/Aerobic Challenge ” participant continuing to engage in extending their quality of life (while also combating PC) through exercise & lifestyle choices…keep up the good work!   I agree that the ACS organizer’s announcement (about the largest turnout of PC survivors) contains “mixed” connotations.     The fact is that prostate cancer is among the more common and least lethal cancers, yielding a large population of survivors.   It has been estimated that there are a million men alive today who have been diagnosed with PC. Your contribution (and mine) to ACS is helping men on both ends of the spectrum.   On the one end , ACS has recently been filling the much-needed gap by producing new educational materials on informed PSA-testing decisions and treatment decisions (or non-treatment/AS decisions) for low-risk men.     On the other end of the spectrum, the largest percentage of the 90+ current ACS funded PC-related research projects are focused on higher-risk cases.   As a noted example, one of the 2011 Nobel Prize winners in Medicine was an ACS research grantee whose discovery of the dendritic cell’s affect on the immune system led to the development of the first therapeutic vaccine for PC, Provenge . Anyhow, glad to hear you had a great day!   Very respectable time, too!

"A little warm" in Houston, is "blistering heat" up here in NJ. 

Temperature in central NJ at race time was 62.  Just right for me.
