CA prostate, bone mets on Morphine

All,

I am writing in hope to get some direction from people in the same boat.

He is having severe nausea, stomach upset and is not ready to eat anything past 10 days. Just some liquids.

Is there anyone doing anything to control the PSA? improve his apetite and anyways to boost him up? Any alternative methods?

He has been going through all this treatment with a lot of will power but now seeing his PSA rise and hearing that there is not much a lot that can be done, he seems to have lost hope. I dont want to give up!!

Dad - diagnozed with Prostate Cancer, Bone Mets in 2008 (PSA 1700) - age 56

Treatment: Hormone therapy, radiation, Docetaxal+Dasatinib PSA reduced to 3.5),

Cabazitaxel(psa 72), honvon(psa 64),  Zytiga started March 2012 (psa 64, 132, 84, 188, 315 in June 2012),

Zytiga stopped but PSA has again doubled to 600 in one months time :(

Pain medication: Morphine, Ultraset

Have you looked into MDV3100?

How about any clinical trials in your area?

Right don't give up!

Hopefully someone else can help with the pain and appetite.

We are all pulling for you and your Dad.

Thankyou. We are meeting the Doctor on Monday at Sloan to discuss our options for MDV3100 and clinical trials. The problem is my dad is outside United States so he is not eligible for most of the trials.
He is our strength and I dont want him to give up hope.

No, despite his current dismal condition, its not time to give up hope. My thoughts and prayers are to you and your father. Hope he's on enough morphine to ease his pain sufficently.

Keep searching, although it does seem like your Dad has gotten many great medicines, there are many more in the pipeline. Sometimes in these countries that are not so important for pharma companies, at least not for the first release, these trials are not advertised broadly, try to find out (use all your contacts that you have) if, for example, MDV3100 is being tested anywhere near where he lives. My Dad is also not in the "Western" country, and I just assumed these trials are not being done. I recently got info (from a company worker, my friend) who told me that indeed the medication was available for limited use (whatever that means). I was quite surprised. And do not ever give up hope!!

Yes he is on enough Morphine. We are thinking that the morphine is causing these side effects such as stomach upset, nausea and loss of apettite. Its just making him very weak  to start the next round of Chemo(Mitoxantrone). I have to find out creative ways to make him eat and gain some energy and also how to motivate him. A strong will power has done wonders for him before which he doesnt seem to have these days.

I am on Fentanyl, which is an synthetic morphine. I am fortunate, because I don't have any of the side effects that you described. I don't know if that is available to your father in India.

It can be in many forms. I am on the patches, which in my case, are changed out every 48 hours. They come in a variety of strengths, depending on the severity of pain and the needs of the patient. They also make it in Lolipop form, so a patient can suck on it for random breakthrough pain. You have to be fully opiate tolerant to be prescribed, but if your father is on real morphine, he would already be considered that.

Sloan is a pretty incredible place. They will find a way to do something. There are lots of options out there. They have some outstanding doctors there. Who will you be seeing there?
Just curious. I think we have seen everyone there.

As everyone said, NEVER give up. There is so much out there right now.

HI,i believe there is an expanded acsess phase 3 trial on a new liquid radiation drug called Alpharadin which specifically targets bone mets.Im not sure which countrys the drug can be administered in but the drug is being developed by Bayor corporation.
