Strong urge to urinate???

I had my catheter removed yesterday and up to this afternoon all seemed fine, very little leaking and stronger stream than I can remember.

The last few hours I really feel the need to urinate more and when I go the stream is weaker. I have had around 90oz of water already today so drinking plenty.

Not even sure what my question is, I was afraid of some sort of clog and that I may have get the catheter back but there is still a good stream. So I'm trying to just ignore the urge to see if enough urine builds up for a strong stream but really wondering about this constant urge that wasn't there before.

Look back over the last 24 hours - any bladder irritants? Carbonated beverages?

A similar thing happened to me. If you are not seeing any blood, then it's probably just irritation. If it really bothers you I wouldn't hesitate calling your urologist to find out what they think.

As far as your stream, I don't know. Mine has been pretty strong ever since (reminds me of when I was 12), but yours may be a temporary thing. If no blood, you may want to just give it a little time and if it doesn't change, call.

I'm 3 weeks post-catheter and let me tell you, brother, it's slow progress. Everyone tells me to give it time, so that's what I'm doing. Still 3 pads a day, but I think there is less leakage. Keep doing your Kegels faithfully. I have a little timer set at 90 minutes and do 10 reps of 10 seconds each time. Now, all the girls are looking at my bladder muscles of steel (they used to look at my pecs).

Call doctor.

Bladder infections are not uncommon after catheter removal, although it could just be irritation.

Sometimes he may prescribe some Flowmax.

Might try some cranberry juice too. Hopefully, it will just go away in a day or 2.

Dave - your body is readjusting to its new normal -without a prostate - so some of the old normal signals might get mixed - continue to do what you do (without the worry) - keep in mind you will be flushing out bits floating around in the bladder, blood clots , bits of blood, etc as the body cleanses itself of stuff left over from the surgery and its aftermath.
-continue with the kegels and positive attitude.
- try to avoid diuretics ( stuff that makes you pee more) like beer, carbonated drinks, coffee, .... while you work on gaining control of your bladder so you have a more even keel of feelings - emotional and physical - as you recover...

Thanks guys, still on antibiotic to protect from infections and as far as blood just a drop or so at the beginning. Staying away from carbonated drinks, lots of water and a little juice.

I appreciate all your thoughts and will monitor closely.

Hopefully it will get better in a few days. I remember getting up all night to go to the bathroom. It seemed I was going/wanting to go more than before surgery. It eventually got better. I am hoping that is your issue.

I had a similar experience and was convinced I had a UTI as I had 3 of them after my biopsy before surgery, the last 2 weeks before surgery. MY URO tested my urine which came back negative and told me it was just the irritation from the sutures and healing of the attachment of the urethra to the bladder. It finally went away after the third week about the time I became fully continent.

I do enjoy being able to pee like a teenager again. I can go into a public restroom at the same time as another man with a prostate and empty my bladder, wash my hands and exit while the other guy is still unzipping his fly smilewinkgrin

I recall having the same sensation shortly after my catheter was removed. In my case it was bladder spasms - doc suggested vesicare and it helped almost immediately.

Still great to get the catheter out though, eh?

I believe it was René Descartes who said "I take data, therefore I am." and who am I to argue with such a great philosopher.

I had a spot off my patio where I marked the ground with distance measurements every 6 inches out to 48 inches. I would pee there several times a day and record how far I got when firing horizontally. That enabled me to quantitatively measure my progress - or lack thereof. It also served as a calculated measure of bladder pressure when I entered my "inseam" height into the excel program I wrote for that purpose.

Warning! Please check local statutes before engaging in said activity. In some states you might be arrested and charged as a sex offender.

Jeff, just a note for you. Would you clearly stake and maybe use some caution tape in that area before Sept? How far was this area from where the mud wrestling pit last year? smilewinkgrin On second thought, maybe I don't want to know.

My hubby has the catheter out for 3 days now. He complained that when he pees, his penis is uncomfortable and felt some kind of stress. It is not really pain, but hard to describe. Is it normal or we need to see the urologist ? Our appointment is on this Thurs, so not sure whether we need to change the appointment to an earlier date.

WinnieHK - you should really start your own thread... But it sounds normal to me. If the cath had been out for three months, that would be a different story.

Winnie I had the same sensation but each day it gets better. I had cathetrr removed last Thur. And feels almost normal today
