I am so sorry, no one in this forum has had more crap fall on them than you. I hope it turns out to just be nothing or something other than the wasting disease that can be treated. Our thoughts will be with you for those of us at GFMPH.

Casey, while I'm a believer in fish oil for cardiovascular health, its use is contraindicated with certain medical conditions such as biopolar disease, familial adenomatous polyposis (pre-cancerous polyps in the colon), compromised immune systems (such as HIV/AIDS) and in people with bleeding disorders. Since the results of David's colonoscopy biopsy is not yet known - e.g., we don't know what type of colon polyps were removed - taking fish oil may do him more harm than good.

One must be very careful with supplements as what is good for one person in a particular situation may not be good - and can even be lethal - for people in other situations. Calcium is a good example. As a woman, my doctors want me to take 600 mgs twice daily, along with vitamin D to aid in absorption. Doses over 1,500 can lead to constipation, nausea, and severe gas/bloating. Doses over 4,000 mgs. daily have been linked to kidney damage. Very high doses of calcium can deplete the body of iron and zinc by blocking the body's absorption of these important minerals.

Sephie, thanks. That was a wise response you gave on supplements in general. Self-dosing of supplements can be dangerous, if not done under the care and advice of a real doctor. This was something the oncology nutricianist I met with recently, she made that same point abuntantly clear to me.

Don - thanks. I underswent some brutal radiation 12 years ago for cancer in my throat, old school wide beam radiation. It did a lot of damage at the time, and I lost a good 40 lbs in less than 2 months. It hurt to eat, and everything I did eat tasted like metal for months after. It hurt to swallow as well. The only odd thing at the time the RO suggested, was to eat a lot of white grapes (most call them green grapes). There was something soothing in the grapes that took away some of the pain in swallowing. All I know, it helped at the time. Wasn't much of a grape eater prior to the radiation, but it made things easier. Eventually, as time wore on, food resumed it's normal taste, and I was able to regain the weight.

The big difference between then and now, was then - I still had appitite, so I was hungry all the time, this time, I have zero appitite, never any feeling of hunger not even stomach noises we all get when we are hungry. It's like that part of me has shut down.

no change, no solution, hoping to know and ask more when i meet again with gastro doc this
monday afternoon. took some otc antacids, but they do nothing - as this isnt the case of heartburn or gas.
