To add insult to injury, I now may need a procedure "before" starting treatment for IMRT/Seeds/Hormones

My prostate at 39cc, has a "nub" or "knuckle" in the median lobe, just at the bladder neck. My RO wants a URO to confirm what's needed. Apparently, the short term hormone may not provide enough shrinkage for this type of encroachment.

The hormone addition, while at first optional, now is recommended due to the fact that if some type of procedure is needed, this will buy time, as a 2-3 month healing period will be required, while the drugs start killing and weakening the cancer

The TURP is for unusually large prostates and is one step down form a full removal, with similar SE's. I think I am more a candidate for a TUNA type, where the offending "nub" is eliminated.

Anyone have any experience with this? idea idea

We had a turp with no side affects, like a roto roter job, piss out a few blood clots after but no other side effects>

You already know a list of choices/options. I have nothing to offer except website thing from John Hopkins you probably already read such???? I could be a wise guy, and say 'sorry Charlie only the best TUNA gets to be star kissed' (lol). Best to your decisionary processes.

I had a TURP at the end of October 2012, the first 2-3 weeks were magic, I was getting up mostly once a night (sometimes twice) and during the day was voiding about every 4 hours. However, after the initial period everything went pear shaped. I now suffer from extreme urgency, extreme frequency and pain near the end of each void. I went from using 1 pad per day because of a few small lightly bloody drips to now around 4 pads a day. I usually dont make the bathroom in time and I am quiet frustrated by the daily washing of trousers and underwear from my inability to hold back my voids. The other problem is the small amount I void. Sometimes I have the need to void 2-3 times in a 1/2 hour.
I have just completed a 3 week course of antibiotics because the urologist said I had an urinary infection and am now 2 weeks into another course of 2 different antibiotics, these I will be on for 3 months to clear up the infection.
I had the Holmium Laser treatment which gave me a quick recovery and short time with a catheter.
Ask about the chances of infection and other side effects. Good luck.

Sorry to hear of the complications you are having.

The HoLEP you had is supposed to be a safer alternative to a TURP.

I am beginning to suspect that all of these procedures have numerous possible side effects that get glossed over.

Because most of us here belong to a small subset of patients, you'll hear a lot more discussions of side effects. The guys who don't have issues either never come here, or move on quickly, so you don't get many "done that, moving on" type folks.

The other side of that comment is that if an SE is even possible, somebody here likely has experience with it.

And yes, I think a lot of us would agree that either the doctors don't tell us everything, or that when they are describing the problems, we are still in the shock phase, where we listen but can't hear. Either way, a lot of decisions are made on partial information, which is not a good thing.
