I know this is off of the subject of our prostate battle but I need a little advise. I have developed a hernia in my groin area, question is do I go to my Urologist for this treatment or to a general surgeon. any input will be greatly appreciated.

Have your Uro. recommend a good surgeon for you . That is what I did .

I had an inguinal hernia (lower right abdomen) discovered during my pre-TURP physical. My uro (who did my TURP) highly recommended a colleague of his to do the hernia surgery at the same time he did the TURP. A kind of "tag team" surgery. I agreed, both surgeons worked on me at the same time, and both surgeries went well. Surgeons specialize.

.. a general surgeon. I had an inguinal hernia repaired, with open surgery and mesh, late last year. The result is outstanding! I could not be more pleased. However, just so you are not surprised, that first few days after surgery, . .. I really hurt. Vicodin was my friend.

I had that last year too. Got a great general surgeon and just got it done. So happy I decided to to just take the hit with the pain and time off work. Life is so much better now.

and like SC said - vicodin will be your friend for a week or so. Take all they give, you'll need it.

Depending on your insurance you may need to get a referral from your PCP or Uro. I am with Kaiser and needed to see my primary doctor to have her enter a referral into the system then it was off to surgery.

I discovered my inguinal hernia just days prior to my RARP. I was able to have both surgeries completed at the same time. In fact, the doc who did the hernia used the same incisions as the DaVinci doc made, sparing me some additional pain.

My Uro said that most of the pain I would feel would be resultant from the hernia procedure. I laughed and said nice try!

I understand that few hospitals are capable of doing back to back procedures like this and was delighted to be rid of the hernia pain and able to do it concurrent with the prostate removal.

Had an inguinal hernia patched up last year. One doctor said not necessary, live with it, unless it gets worse. But I had a general surgeon patch it up last July. Glad I did, not that it was a bother, but rather to just get it off my mind. Yup, it does hurt a bit during recovery, and you should not lift anything over 6 lbs. (gallon of aviation jet fuel, or water whichever you prefer) for at least 6 weeks or until released by the hernia hunters. It was a good excuse not to take the garbage out or mow the back 40. I was also told that if you had robotic surgery for PCa then, in all probability, you would not be a candidate for lap hernia repair.

My PC physician did the referral. When I first visited the surgeon ( 2nd opinion) I asked if I could wait until September (this was April) he said no problem. Then about July I figured let's just "get er done." Good as new now, glad I did it.

It is a simple operation, but as I was once told, "it is always the other guy who has minor surgery."

Do ask the doctor treating your cancer about what you need to do if anything in preparation.  My husband is on ADT and some other stuff for his PCa, and has a hernia.  His doctor said he'd need to come off a couple of the PCa drugs a few days in advance of the surgery, and also that his cancer regimen would likely mean slower healing from the surgery.  Apparently many of the drugs that inhibit cancer also inhibit wound healing.  Right now I'm not remembering exactly which drugs were the problematic ones, but I'll check my notes tomorrow am and let you know if I see the specifics.  But definitely make sure your PCa doctor is aware.

Wow...I had this horrible pain in groin after surgery,what I'm hearing here is a possible corrolation between pc and inguinal hernia's.Mine was extremely painful,my uro just said it wasn't me,sent me on my way but by one month after Larp I had to go ER in which they tried to have me do back surgery after 4 epadurel shots in the back didn't matter.I got a GP TO LOOK AT ME AND A ULTRA SOUND AND HE FOUND THE HERNIA He did the surgery and it was immediatly better.It has been over a year and I'm having some tightness and prickling sensation there now which I'm monitoring.There has been some class actions suits about using these mesh patches ,which I have.Sure hope I don't have an issue with it.But I was suprised to see so many others with the same issues. Just saying! Good day commrades!
