Can Lupron Cause High Blood Pressure?

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced high blood pressure after starting Lupron?

We met with the oncologist yesterday, no real "new" news. We just discussed what she told me over the phone w/Dad.

My question here is as my subject states, "has anyone noticed the onset of high blood pressure after the start of Lupron"?

Dad's BP has always run really low (always around 120/70). At the oncologist appointment it was at one point 189/105.  They checked it several times, several different ways... it was always in the 170's over 100 or higher.

At first we thought white coat syndrome but after checking again this morning it was still as high.

His PCP doesn't think it's related to the Lupron (but what do they know)? and is more from stress...but I'm not sure because he never had High BP before.

Thoughts?

I ran into the same thing (BP 150 to 155) when at the hospital, my Doctor said my blood pressure was probably high because I was here (at the VA Hospital in DC).

My quess is stress.

Lupron's informational insert reads:
"In these same studies, the following adverse reactions were reported in less than 5% of the patients on Lupron Depot 22.5 mg for 3-month administration.

Cardiovascular System - Arrhythmia, Bradycardia, Heart failure, Hypertension, Hypotension, Varicose vein"

In other words, your Dad is one of those affected with hypertension. This might require some medication to control BP during treatment.

I had been on several BP medications for over 12 years when I started on Lupron. We had to closely monitor my BP (bought a cuff, took daily readings and recorded). I had a couple of additional BP meds started, then stopped, etc., for about 1-1/2 years trying to get the BP under better control. Gaining 25 pounds was a double whammy and definitely impacted blood pressure.

While on Lupron, he may have to get on medication for BP, and watch out for the weight gain!

Ive been on lupron for 5 months and already had HBP before I started. My blood pressure has actually lowed to normal since I been on Lupron.

Ahhh... the "white coat syndrome".  My blood pressure has always been in the normal or slightly elevated range when measured at home, but high(er) when visiting the oncologist.  Finally, I brought my home blood pressure cuff to my appointment and confirmed that its accuracy - matching my reading to theirs.

Of course, Lupron can cause weight gain, which also increases blood pressure.

My blood pressure is always high when I go to the hospital.

It was higher during treatment almost to the point of needing medication.

I check it at home and it's about 10-20 points lower.

If I lost 30lbs it would probably go down.

I think the Lupron may have elevated it The avastin did elevate it

many drugs raise blood pressure.

Concerned for you,the answer is yes for zoladex which is a similar drug.I was totally fit when I first had a zoldex implant and my blood pressure got to 198/ 90....it calmed down after about 4 months but should be monitored closely....high blood pressure is very dangerous as your aware.

I was walking 6 to 8 miles 4 times a week when I started Lupron. Due to high blood pressure I had to continuously decrease my mileage until I was down to 1/2 mile. My BP would go up into the 170’s to 180’s and would not return to normal for 7 to 10 days. My urologist confirmed that this was a side effect from Lupron. The drug info for Lupron on drugs.com identifies high BP as one of the side effects of Lupron. Of course one has to realize that BP can also increase due to the anxiety from dealing with prostate cancer. I’ve been on Lupron for 3.5 years now and will probably need to remain on it for life due to having a highly aggressive form of prostate cancer. But being on Lupron is much better than the alternative.
