Are there things to help prevent radiation burn?

I was talking with a coworker whose father is undergoing SRT and she mentioned he has some burns from it...so it prompted me to look online to first, see what does a rad burn look like (ouch) and second, are there things that can minimize or prevent a burn, should my own father have to undergo SRT someday.

So then I found this lotion, called Therosol...anyone heard of it or used it? Any other ways to minimize burns?

Paul used a sublingual homeopathic remedy (silicea 30x) and had no burns at all which awed his radiation oncologist. The poo-hooer that he is, he had such doubts but he couldn't argue with the evidence. I personally know of 2 women who underwent radiation for BCa who used it as well and had good results. Ages were 34, 38 and 60.

I researched it well and we consulted with our naturalpath Physician (yes, he is an M.D.) before Paul used it. That was our experience. Not suggesting anyone try it mind you :)

It's not like radiation for breast cancer - you don't get skin burns from it. The energy of the X-rays is so high (6-10 megavolts)that it passes through the skin without interacting. The last time they had skin burns from it was in the 1940s when they used kilovolt X-rays. The radiation nowadays conforms to the shape of the prostate and drops off very quickly outside of the prostate. IGRT techniques, especially when used during each treatment, make for incredibly precise energy deposition. Your rectum and bladder may get somewhat inflamed, but not your skin.

I had my SRT aimed in from 7 directions.
I definitely had a reaction on my skin in a couple of places on my sides where the beam entered me. They were patches a couple of inches wide that looked reddish and bit like it had a suntan and it got a bit dry and was a bit itchy.
My SRT doc said don't put anything on the skin without checking with them first.
I did nothing other than take care when washing and drying myself and it disappeared soon after the SRT stopped.

Same as Alf here, seven angles so it focuses on the prostate bed. My bladder has a bit of burn causing blood in urine occaisionally. Dont know if the cure for that is worth it, cauterizing.

During my RT I had what would best be described as spots of sunburn for a few days. Also was told not to put anything on it.

My husband had radiation 'burn' at the very end of his 45 IMRT sessions (primary treatment). It showed up the last day or maybe even the day after and looked like a sunburn across his backside. He said he didn't feel it, and would not have known it was there if I hadn't noticed it. It took several days to disappear, and we did nothing at all. It was one of only a few minor side effects he ever had from his treatment, either during or after....no urinary symptoms at all, no fatigue, just the rash and a few weeks of the occasional 'wet fart'. Two years out, PSA is dropping and you would never know what he went through. Hope your father does as well if he should have to have SRT at some point!

I had IGRT and no radiation burns at all, not even loss of any body hair. I did use aloe Vera on my skin every day after radiation just as a precaution but didn't need it. Be careful about putting anything on your skin before the radiation because some of the lotions can interfere with it.

OK well that makes me feel much better to know that burns should not happen...maybe a little sunburn type of thing, but not what the pictures I saw on google images look like!  Those looked so painful and I don't want my dad to have to go through that.  So thanks for letting me know what to expect if he has to do SRT.  One less thing to worry my mind at night.

I am currently going through IGRT and IMRT, tomorrow is Session 31 out of 38. I am zapped in nine different places. While I have experienced skin irritation where they put the daily b.b. stickers, and dry skin, I have not really had burns. I feel like I have a real bad sun burn in my pelvic region.

In discussions with fellow PCa brothers going through radiation, some mention that their Radiologist Oncologists have prescribed a sulfer cream that they apply topically once their daily radiation session is completed. I am told that you can't put it on before the session, but you can after.

Hopefully, he can get some of that cream and it will help.
