My dad had robotic radical prostatectomy with lymph nodes removal on 22 apr 2013. It's been over 6 days and he's still collecting about
700 ml on his surgical drain. The fluid is a dilute red, so must contain blood. His urologist says it is unusual and has put him on iron supplements. I'm getting worried. Has anyone had a similar experience?

no, I didn't. I was told it might ooze for a few days (it didn't in my case).
Your urologist doesn't sound worried, however. Can you make an appointment with your regular doctor for a second opinion?

Yep, I did. The doctor was unconcerned and said it would stop draining "eventually".
"Eventually" turned out to be 54 days and I had to keep it and the catheter in for the duration.
The doctor said that I held the record for his patients.
No lasting effects.

My Foley drained for over two weeks, everyone is different, I understand the norm is 3-5 days.

Mine did for 5 weeks, it will stop. also ask you doc about
lymphoceles, you may develop them also, I did. They self resolved themselves but did have low-grade fever for a couple of weeks. its the price of lymph node disection, well worth it in my opinion. I have read on this forums.Casey59 actually, that it can result in up to 30% decrease in BCR. Research it yourself, as I very well could be wrong. As I remember he had studies to back it up. this does not necessarily mean that those who have not had it done are at a higher risk. studies and stats are as tricky as Pca, itself.

PS I will say the blood is unusual, I did not have that , I thought it was urine, but was it was not, I did the smell test and it failed Lymphoceles are body created sacs of lymph flid that can get big, mine were the size of golf balls. If they don't self resolve, they are lanced ay an office visit. It is not the the same as lymphodema, so don't concern yourself about
that. Very treatable and no lasting effects.

Hubby had his drain out the day after surgery, and it bled/drained a lot. Heavily saturated the the thick bandage for probably the first 4 days I believe. It slowly lessened, and finally quit probably day 8?
It was scary as hell for me those first few days... I even took him in on day 3? to get it checked, and they said it was fine.
I hope your dad's clears up soon.
Diana :)

Mine drained after the tube was removed for about
5 days.

Thanks everyone for your sharing. He was still collecting 600 ml yesterday from the surgical drain. Doesn't seem to be slowing. No fever. He's meeting his urologist on Monday to collect his biopsy results. We'll ask about
lymphoceles then. In meantime, I guess all we can do is wait for it to stop. He's got ankylosing spondylitis too, not sure if that's slowing the recovery.
