18 Months Post Open RP at Hopkins

Had my 18 month visit today. Had the PSA about an hour prior to the visit and it was't ready by the time of my appointment. I was a bit peeved about that, but I'll get it tomorrow. Anyway...

Doc asked how everything was going... (I'm a G6, organ confined, clear margins, clear lymph nodes and seminal vesicles PCa patient.) Continence: 99.8% and ED is improving (about 70-85% pre-surgery). He was happy to hear the wife and I were successful twice in the last three weeks without meds. Says I should use the meds or not and pursue what I felt best. I have no pain urinating or during sex or after.

He said there was no need for me to come to see him any longer unless I elected to. He "enjoys" seeing me, but says he's certain that I am done with PCa. (I hope I can soon become as confident as him.) He wants me to keep in touch via email and have my GP administer a yearly PSA and send him the results.

I feel sort of like I'm being born again. I see this wide open "cancer free" world in front of me, but I'm a little skittish yet. Being told you have cancer when you're 41-42 after never hardly having a sniffle is a jolt. Add to that being a newer dad of three kids all under 6, it was a sobering dose of reality. I don't dwell on it, but it's in my mind. I think I'll always look over my shoulder.

Watching my one year old waddle around after his sisters who are racing thru the house makes me very happy. I wish happiness in the same measure to all the guys here who fight PCa and who have provided such valuable information thru discussion to guys like me. Thanks.

wow, what great news. I know EXACTLY how you feel.

My guy also says I'm done with PCa but I don't feel done (yet). The cancer is in my head.

You are so lucky to have babies and toddlers, what fun.

Well, got the phone call today that it's another undetectable. The nurse said that I should have future PSA's yearly and the results forwarded to Hopkins. The GP can do them at my yearly physical. So I guess that's that... hopefully.
