An easy, non-confrontational subject: Hobbies are GFMPH, what is yours?

Together, hubby and I collect coins, and take care of our aquariums (yes, plural- 5 right now- have had as many as 9).  We also LOVE to travel.  Used to go to Europe 2xs a year- until Mother-in-law's health issues prevented us.  Now we do one nighters to see classic rock bands around the country (going to Vegas tomorrow to see Fleetwood Mac (hubby loves Stevie Nicks). 

Me- I love to read- especially science fiction/fantasy.  Just finished Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.  I also enjoy drawing and other art.  I hope to be able to take some classes at one of our community colleges this fall.  The rest of my time is spent taking care of m-I-l, my mom, and hubby.  And daughter and her hubby and 2 sons, and Son and his wife with a daughter on the way.

It's actually quite funny, my doctors right hand man, his assistant and head nurse, told me I had a five year pass on the laundry. Gail just laughed as we walked out the office at the cath removal appointment.

Regarding trout... State of Washington also has a strain of "Triploid Rainbow Trout" (Genetically altered)...

Average rainbows caught there range from 2 to 6 pounds. Since these are raised in net pens before being released into the system, their fins (particularly the dorsal and tail fins) shows wear. Because they are triploids and well fed, they have a much less streamlined shape than a diploid rainbow. This shape, resembling a football, adds to their fight as the girth of the fish in heavy currents makes them fun to catch on light gear.

Washington also has Lake Trout which can push the scales over 20 lbs... We also have river fishing for Steelhead (ocean going Rainbow Trout) and they can also get in that range... We may have a lot of rain, but also some dang good fishing!

These are rainbows that come up the river in the spring to spawn. The lake also has lake trout that get up to 30 pounds. Up until this year they were paying $15 for every trout head turned in because they were trying to reduce the trout population because they were eating too many Kokanee salmon. We only catch and release. We also catch a lot of browns in the 5 to 10 pound range.
I've fished just about every river in Montana and nothing compares to the river in my back yard. Today there were 7 eagles and a moose in my backyard and 7 elk out front. Sure beats Palm Springs and the 105 degree heat.

JohnT - that's amazing, but you are in an amazing area. Here in western SC, we share the famous Chattooga River with GA. It was where the movie Deliverance was filmed. We also have another good trout river, the Eastatoe, but that's about it. Even before my PC event, I had given fly fishing up, too many years of pounding on my knees walking and wading the rocks. I too, only did catch and release. Last time I ever had moose walking my property, was 25 years ago when I was still living in northern NH. I envy where you are at.

questions - I have collected all kinds of things over the years, then sold them off. I was really into collecting pre-printing press documents and book leafs, oldest piece was from 1250 AD, made a fortune off of that one piece. also broke up an extensive library of rare books, but did keep some personal favorites. forgot, also have a large collection of ocean liner related material, doubt I will ever break that up. you are into some cool stuff. I can't really do much yard work anymore either, this will be the last season I attempt to mow, even on a yard tractor, my hip and joints can't take the pounding. yard work is not gfmph in my case

fairwind, loved all the stuff you currently do, never did r/c planes, but think they are cool, messed a little with the smaller r/c helicopters but end up most of the time retrieving it, lol. going to give it to my grandson.

watches are a big hobby with some, are you talking vintage type or modern or both?

I used to collect vintage pieces in the 80s as watches were not as popular as today, there weren't that many modern watches, the only modern watches that I collected at the time were Patek Philippe.

Different hobbies for different weather/seasons.
If I can't go out then I guess family history research. I have made quite a large family tree and have traced back many parts for many generations.

I used to work of the railway and am interested in trins etc and have a model railway, but don't use it (okay play with it) as much as I would like too, (That sounds like ED.)

Since moving from an appartment to a house I now have a small garden so that is kind of a new hobby, but being British everyone in the family in the UK has gardens so gardening kind of came naturally.

Have made a lot of basic furniture over the years. Beds, bookcases, tables, cupboards, desk etc, but now it's more just about repairing things around the house. (I'm quite good with DIY and in the old place I fitted a new kitchen and bathroom)

I used to cycle a fair bit, just on a normal bike, but since hurting the base of my spine do much less.

And seeing this is HW I guess a guy can admit that he thinks sex is a bit of a hobby.

I am a serious investor (stocks, options, mutual funds) which is a natural outgrowth of my mathematics background. Maybe it's not technically a hobby, but I do enjoy it, so maybe it is.

I am a computer nut (I suspect most of us are -- heck, we are on a FORUM).

Although my profession is now a University Professor, I totally enjoy it. I consider this as doing what I love to do in retirement. So, again, I think of hobbies as a state of mind. Whatever you enjoy doing is a hobby, even if it is technically your job.

While I have been dealt a cruel blow medically, I am very grateful that I wake up every morning and look forward to going to work during the academic year.

I am a serious tournament poker player. Love it!

I also enjoyed my time working in industry. I used to work for NASA in the space program. That was enjoyable too.

Driving old cars and working on them until my fatigue problems came to the front.

An amazing and socially interesting MMO called Lord of the Rings Online. You can fight the evil of Mordor or attend any one of multiple player run events such as Weatherstock which is a 4 hour music marathon that gathers around 500 players for an immersive experience unlike any other. Or roleplay your journey following Frodo and the fellowship, or just drink ale, smoke Pipeweed, and dance at any Inn you like. I never thought at my age I would be so hooked on this game.

I too like Scifi books. Ive read 2 of the Wheel of Time series. Arent there like 981 books of that series?
