No, my Sprite wasn't "bugeye" and had "rollup windows"...The British Lucas electrical system was terrible. A real toy car but it was nice to tour the old sites in Turkey along the Aegean Sea with the top down--it took 5-10 minutes to "rebuild" the top if it rained or the sand flew from the Saraha..Since it was my 1st, I liked it..Yes, I drove my father-in-laws 3 cyl Saab with a freewheeling transmission--not for me!
It sounds like your Lincoln has everything to include a chiropractor..Good for you.

Austin Marina was sold as Morris Marina in UK. I seem to recvall that the body was actually styled by Pinninfarina!

Rust problem with a lot of cars built in UK at that time had to do with factories within the British Leyland/BMC group making things all over the country and leaving them outside waiting to be taken to the plants where they were assembled, or even painted. Rememebr seeing a ,oad of MG bodies outside the factory near Oxford getting wet!
My dad bought an Austin in the 1960s and when he sat down the back of the seat snapped off. He bought a bigger Austin and after a few years it had rusted so much his feet went through the floor. (He regretted getting rid of his Daimler that he bought in 1936 at a big discount as it had been used at the London Motor Show and the interior was worn out! Better tahn an earlier car, a Rover, that caught fire adn was destroyed!)

I remember driving an early 60's Dodge in the parking lot before I was old enough to take drivers training. I think the model was a Seneca and it had push-button transmission, too. That thing was a TANK!

My first car was a white 1966 Volvo P1800S sports car bought for $1200. This was like the car Simon Templar (played by Roger Moore) drove in the 60’s British TV show “The Saint”.

A little trivia: supposedly, Jaguar was asked to provide a “typically British” sports car; an E-type for the show, but could not deliver due to labor strikes. So with time running out Roger Moore suggested using his own personal car, a Volvo P1800. This worked wonders for the Swedish made P1800, as sales surged because the car was suddenly “cool”

I enjoyed the car – loved the way it looked, and it drove nice, but it really needed more horsepower than its little 2 liter 4 cylinder could muster. Probably a good thing, as the lack of power kept me out of trouble.

A 3 year old 69 Impala with the best motor every built a chevy 327. Blue with white landau roof. Favorite car I ever drove was a 1969 Camaro, Indy pace car version, convertible with 350 4-barrel, 4 in the floor, kick in the petal and you could just about see the gas needle move left when the 4-barrel kicked in.

my first car per se isn't that important, what's important to me is how times have changed.

In order to buy my first car, I pumped gas for minimum wage until I had enough to buy a used car. My son and all his friends expect a high end car in high school! What makes matters worse for dads like me is our wives who side with them.

Thank God most colleges don't let Freshman bring a car to school.

close, David... I'll tell you it was champagne color with black bubbles and stick shift. It would probably still be running without much need for maintenance if I still had it. I sold it after 6 months as I was moving back to Italy for what ended up being only a year in Italy before coming back to America.

My son is not getting a car. Has nothing to do with finances. I find the whole concept ridiculous. He's 16 1/2 and never had a job (although a great student and no trouble). At his age I had already been a construction worker (Italian laws are lax) and a waiter in a pain in the ass busy Roman restaurant. And I was taking buses, trains, the metro and catching rides with friends. I also hope he picks an urban college like Columbia or St. Andrews in Edinburgh so he won't need a car for a long time. Who knows, if he stays urban he won't need one at all.

never owned an American car, although I watch those Texas garage shows and dream of a nice 59 Corvette. It was a used Hyundai. Paid something like $5000 for it in 87. Was very fortunate to sell it for the same amount. As soon as I moved to Italy I got the obligatory Golf Turbo Injection which in Italy is a rite of passage. I did wrap that one around a tree. Then I went years without a car because I did grad school in NYC and lived in NYC for years. Moved to suburbia only after my second child and went for the station wagon and mini van. Thank God those days are over... Fell for the BMW hype until I lost my patience with maintenance costs (scams), then settled down with Acura and Infiniti which come with lots of toys, drive well (well didn't like the Acura too much) and mostly, require little to no maintenance unlike the German cars in same category.

I loved living in the center of Rome without a car.

As a brain washed Italian it was in fact the Golf GTI which as mentioned above, was and continues to be a rite of passage in Italy for young guys.

But my first dream car was one I spotted in London in 1977/78 when i lived there. It was a yellow Triumph TR7 and walking down the road with my dad past the dealership I said "do you promise to get me one" and he said "I do" but he never did...

1953 Ford convert ... black ... FIRST CAR!

In the old high school days, it had a column mount 3-speed manual, a flat-head V8 - then the grill was removed/blackened out and baby moons added at all 4-wheels. Before the first Summer was over, a new interior in red/white phony leather + a new white vinyl top completed the cosmetics. And of course, before the Summer ended, I blew out the clutch on what was supposed to be a beer run (oops)!!!!!

Well over 50-years ago - but still a memory worth keeping!
