My GP is a LSU grad and huge fan and during football season he wears purple scrubs to work. He is the absolute best doctor I have even had and was the first to think I had PC and refer me to a URO. Being a big Bama Fan I do not let that get in my way of being treated, I just do not get sick on Fridays during football season. smhair

I need the best surgeon possible, don't care if he/she is an arrogant abrupt person.
In a GP I need an intelligent doctor who is a good communicator. I care very much about my GP's bedside manner.

So it is tough to fill out your survey.

"Rotten bedside manner" may cover a multitude of issues. (surgeons in the UK were traditionally very abrupt with patients - they prefer them unconscious.)
I thus feel like I stuck with my surgeon despite him not being the greatest communicator. r

My surgeon gave me no cause to think he was anything but very skilled at his job. He was however a very shy chap and after examining me before surgery he asked my wife and I to follow him over to the corner of the room where there was a desk and some chairs. He then basically faced the corner and mumbled a few things about what was going to happen etc without be able to look at me, let alone "connect". Fortunately he was repeating what other members of his team had already told me/us earl;ier thyat day. And that was the key, as the urology team that he was part of, indeed the entire hospital staff, have, between them, provided all the assorted skills needed.

Actually, I think what you said in your post first about the surgeon and then about the GP does answer what the survey was asking.

I don't care how much of a genius "House" is. If he were my doc, he'd be limping because I'd just kicked him in the balls.

It's not just doctors and patients who can be ***wipes.

When I was a high school administrator, one of my duties had an official title, but in house I was in charge of dealing with obnoxious parents (we actually had a different expression).  Let me just assure you that folks in any role (eg: parents) can be obnoxious.

To stray a little further from this topic, let me add a philosophical comment:

I had that duty because I was good at it. I could be relaxed, LISTEN, and I had the power/authority to do things. But, mainly, I had this view that the most obnoxious parents could end up being our greatest supporters, under the right circumstances. I was proven right quite often. I would do something to help them, and for the next few years I (and my school) walked on water as far as they were concerned. The parents who didn't give a rip were a far greater source of frustration.

Not sure of this has anything to do with doctor/patient attitudes. Maybe.

Are you kidding me?   I'd pay extra.  

Any time I'm going to get cut, or radiatiated (never have, but if I was), or see an oncologist (again, haven't, at least not for myself), then I know it's serious.  I'm going to get the best.  Not just the best in Mayberry...the best.  I'm an informed patient.  Before I had my knee reconstruction, I had already watched the whole procedure online and could talk the lingo with the surgeon; same with my RP.  I don't care what the doctor's personality is like; I care about the outcome.  If I'm going to get treated for a cold, that's different.

i would answer this with a resounding "no". if this doc is arrogant, condescending and unpleasant to harold, he will treat his office staff, lab technicians, hospital staff and nurses the same way. my husband would be intereracting with this support staff. no way would they be giving their best if they are abused by some arrogant jerk. i'd run to another doc!!
ps if the doc's bedside mammer is crummy but he's really a nice guy - no problem. if he's really an a%%hat - we are so outta there!

Seriously though, in choosing a surgeon, I want the guy with the best hands, experience, etc. doing the job. I don't care if he's someone I want to have dinner with or not. When he is doing the important work, I'll be unconscious. Although, even in this regard, it was nice to hear how my surgeon made my wife feel comfortable when he went out to talk with her while I was in recovery.

As for a doctor with whom I will have an ongoing relationship, his bedside manner certainly matters to me. If for no other reason than a doctor with a good bedside manner can elicit more information. I, as a patient, do not always know what is important to communicate.

My surgeon, whom I think is one of the many that fits in that "best" category is always keen to point out that it's not just the surgeon, but also his/her team. Not much emphasis usually goes into the team but I think they're critical also. I certainly was blown away by the entire team that operated on me and then helped me through the various recovery steps. I think my the head nurse working with my surgeon is an angel. It wasn't only about all the information and advice she shared with me, but was also about how effectively she could communicate these.
