I hope NOT to offend anyone here but feel compelled to release. I don't post much on here and VISIT this site on occasion for what this site represents...HEALING! Underneath the word HEALING, I see the words COMMUNITY. SUPPORT. RESOURCES. which I do often find upon my visits, on occasion I look at locked threads and, honestly wish I hadn't. Overall, everyone here is great. But the bickering tends to sour the healing process. Most locked threads seem to start innocently and, somehow

end up having offended someone for a very petty reason. Attitudes are contagious, I'd rather catch a positive attitude than negative attitude. Best wishes to all!

Cut a guys n**ts off, and expect him to be contakerous. Question his journey thus far, suggest he could or should have done or not done something, and now he's hacked off.

I think it is probably a healthy release for some men, and really not an indictment of the average HW member.

Do wish I had $20 for every thread I have deleted so I would not start a fight. Wish more guys would use e-mail.

Eagle, you bring up a valid point, can't argue with it.

However, as far as forums go, this place is still peaceful overall. Thank goodness political and religious comments are taboo here, they seem to make other forums go out of control on a regular basis.

Considering what many deal with here - pain, fear, uncertainty, HT related issues, etc, plus all of our assorted egos and opinions - really not all that much infighting considering HW PC is one of the busiest of all the HW forums based on sheer number of threads and daily posts.

Somewhat new on HW. What is locked threads??

I've been to a few sites and this one seems to be the best in my opinion.

Grandpa (there are too many daves in here, LOL), it's a thread where a moderator has closed it to any more discussion, usually because it got out of hand or it has passed its point of relevance. Hence it has been "locked." You can usually identify it by the little padlock icon in most forums.

It's not uncommon to see locked threads in many forums on the intarwebz. It's a good housekeeping tool for the most part and keeps it more civil for newcomers and visitors.

Yeah, I misunderstood. I thought we could actually delete threads. That would be a great pre-emptive tool in avoiding a circus atmosphere because sometimes e hold back, hold back but then just can't resist diving in.

I took it to mean that we can delete threads we started, to nip things in the bud if we don't like the direction it's taking, but it might also mean deleting a post after having some second thoughts. Been there, done that.

I have also found the private messaging feature of most forums to be more useful than email if I needed to talk to somebody back-channel. If there is one here, I don't see it.

Can we delete threads we've created here? Some forums allow it, some don't.

Guys, re the housekeeping questions you asked -- if the OP wants his/her thread deleted then he/she can do so by selecting the Delete Post icon in the upper right hand corner of the post. If a poster is not the OP then the Delete Post function will only delete the chosen post.

Your moderators can also edit all posts and delete all posts. We could delete an entire thread also. However, that is rarely done as we do our best to let the threads run and try to only edit or delete sparingly.

And, Eaglekeeper, your sentiments are well stated and non-offensive. Unfortunately some of our topics end up being "hot button" topics and some of us (myself included) get a little...shall we say, enthusiastic...when we respond.

Doug, there is none that I know of. As far as I know there is the chat room (which is public) and the email address that you can enable in your profile. I use an email address here that is separate from my "normal" one.

Please tell me a little more about what you're envisioning. Would this be like a pop-up so that you can instantly chat with someone privately or a message box?

Jim, I used to help moderate an auto forum a few years ago, but I don't want to come off as an expert, because I'm not. I'd have a hard time finding my way through PHP and MySQL settings now. It's been a few years.

Also, my hair is grayer now and I use it for a good excuse to forget things.smilewinkgrin

Other forums that I frequent have an internal messaging system, which seems to emulate internal email. There is a "PM" (or similar) button icon next to a user's name/icon, which will open a dialog box to send a private text message to that user. The text box behaves pretty much like the text boxes we use to post replies in threads, but goes to that user only.

Messages also get stored much the same way our emails do, with "inbox, sent, deleted", etc. I don't know how much server space HW has, so I can envision that as being a sticking point. They might not want to enable PMs.

First I apologize for my part in the squabbles. I have disengaged the discussions on screening and ODOT.

The reason is because of the negative way the conversations went with people being offended personally that I finally hit a frustration and posted what I wished I didn't. And I apologize for that as well.

Moving forward I won't be discussing certain controversial topics but I will be observing the discussions to try to stay aware of the conversations and the various views.

But I do encourage discussions. The key I always that was important was the "community" part. And in any community you have various points of view not always in agreement. I suggested bring a new forum up but the "big tent" won and so it is that healing, must include, support, community and resources and not just individual case results.

You won't see me in those squabble anymore. And I think that's whats best for me.

'thought I'd respond to this thread rather than start a new one, but if I started a new thread, I think I'd title it "Proud to be here!" The other day when I posted, our oldest son came home and told me his girlfriend's uncle passed from ALS and a friend of mine had a stroke. Not a good day. I popped on a thread regarding radiation thinking it was about PC but found it dealing with a poster dealing with radiation concerns having nothing to do with PC, several PC brothers helped her with her concerns and she wished them well. That's community, that's healing, that's awesome. Thanks!
