Thanks Jim but I'm a Duke fan. Wake me up when basketball season starts.

We'll leave the college football to the many LSU fans on this site and David for Clemson.

Jim, I must confess, even though I live less than 20 miles from Clemson, can't claim to be a fan, not even with my son being a senior in the Engineering School. Nothing against their team, but I have never followed any college football team. If it were not for the honors being bestowed on me in a week or so, I wouldn't have even thought about going to this game.

I am a NFL fan all the way, and have been a Patriots fan continuously since 1970. I love my Red Sox too, but rarely would have the patience to watch a baseball game even on television, they drag on too long.

But, I will keep an open mind, perhaps seeing a college game live and in person, will change my perspective of the sport.

Being a local, I would rather see Clemson win than lose. I did see that the USC Gamecocks won their opening game tonight over NC.

Truth be known, my fave sport to watch will always be Moto GP (grand prix motorcycle racing).

25 years in this country and I could never get into college football or college basketball (except March Madness).

They just complicate it too much with all those bowls.

I did get into the NFL and NBA.

But it's all about the EPL and Serie A for me. Both started last week, NBC has picked up the EPL and is doing an amazing job with it. I have better access to it here than my family and friends have in the UK.

I prefer sports that require more intelligence than brute animal strength. Baseball, soccer and tennis for starters.

Tim I remember War Eagle Walt (D-back at Auburn) telling me that brut force was the best way to get two heads together. Especially on the Alabama Tide team.

It's been two years. I actually stay more in touch with his church friends. Just made me think about her tonight so I can see making the call again soon. She is an amazing lady.

It helps to be a big college football fan if you grew up in a college town like I did, and where I now live (Gainesville, Fla.). The University of Florida is here, and it pretty much dominates every aspect of local life.

In fact, one of the local jokes is that if the University of Florida wasn't here, then Gainesville would just be another gas stop on the way to Miami. (Possibly true).

So anything to do with UF, including its athletic teams, is a big deal around Gainesville. This translates into a kind of university-oriented way of life, with orange and blue (the school colors) painted everywhere, many local businesses with "Gator" in their names ("Gator Plumbing," "Gator Used Cars," etc.). The presence of the university sort of defines local life.

And it doesn't hurt that the annual Gator football games here generate several million dollars for the local economy (ticket sales, food, lodging, gas, shopping, etc., for fans coming to the games from out of town).

So, for some of us, college football games are a significant cultural and economic event.

81GyGuy - I guess one has to be born here to get into the Gators versus the Noles versus the Hurricanes.

I moved to Florida in 2000 and the only time I really followed college football was when Tim Tebow was playing. His team from St Augustine had absolutely destroyed our local team in high school game but friends met his parents and were very impressed with their family values.

In fact Tebow's dad is speaking at a breakfast on Sept 14 not far from where I live.

Now that I have been accepted into UF & Shands's Metastatic Disease Program, I guess I better follow the Gators in football. But for basketball I will follow ACC over Billy ball, UK or any SEC teams

Lupron Jim - we Patriots fans would be more than happy to give him to you or any other team that will take him. Even in the closing pre-season game against the Giants last night, he was still too little too late. I am hoping he doesn't make the final cut. Pretty bad when his hometown team, Jacksonville, didn't want any part of him - and they desperately need help as a team.

I am with LupronJim....basketball is where it's at....I am a Hoosier .

We have however just completed, for us, a winning season with a 73-35 victory in our season opener last night. At IU such a performance will get the coach a five year contract extension......I just don't remember his name! Go Big Red!!!

I'm a big PAC 12 fan having gone to both UCLA and USC. Up here in Idaho it's all Washington and WSU.

What surprises me is the agility and speed with which 300-pound linemen manuever.  I played a lot of amateur sports--softball, tennis, cycling--at half that weight when I was in my 20s, but with half the finesse they have.  Go figure.

As rabid as football fans are in the U.S., worldwide American football is way down the list in fan base. Here is a listing of sports by popularity:

1) Soccer (Football): 3.3-3.5 billion fans (Europe, Africa, Asia, Americas, etc.)
2) Cricket: 2-3 billion fans (India, UK, Pakistan, Asia, Australia, etc.)
3) Field hockey: 2-2.2 billion fans (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia)
4) Tennis: Around 1 billion fans (Europe, Americas, Asia)
5) Volleyball: Around 900 million fans (Asia, Europe, Americas, Australia)
6) Table tennis: Around 900 million fans (Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas)
7) Baseball: Around 500 million fans (US, Japan, Cuba, Dominican Republic)
8) Golf: Around 400 million fans (US, Canada, Europe)
