Todd - Thanks for joining in on my thread. I checked out your blog and you have really had an amazing year. I liked how you credited PCa for a lot of it. Look at all the friends we have met just on HW because of PCa. You have certainly done your part of getting the message out all year. Thanks for all you do.

David - Yeah some of those slogans are so simple in getting the message delivered and that is how it needs to be. Most men do not want to go to a urologist and be given "the finger" when the first step is a SIMPLE PSA test. Some of these events this month offer free PSA test at the event.

Kdeinv - Looks like Atlanta has a great event planned. If you need some help deciding on what to wear, look at A Yooper's post on the previous page. If you follow his lead, you won't be missed.
Good luck with your decision on your treatment plan. Oh what a relief it is when you decide what direction you are going to take.

My daughter, granddaughter and I are signed up for a prostate cancer awareness walk in Moline IL on 09/22. $$ go towards education and prostate research. I am also working on a letter to the editor of our local newspaper.

Hey Bill and all - I know I've posted this before, but thought I'd put it out on this thread as it's about an awareness walk/run for this Sunday, September 15th.

It is the "9th Annual SEA Blue Walk/Run" presented by Us TOO International and Wellness Place - both 501(c)3 non-profit organizations.

From the website page on this event:

"The SEA Blue Walk/Run is a Chicagoland event that has raised over $2 million for prostate cancer support, education, and awareness. Funds generated from the SEA Blue Walk/Run directly affect the thousands of men and their loved ones touched by prostate cancer every day.

Join us for a day of camaraderie, education and celebration. One step at a time, your participation in the SEA Blue Walk/Run helps us raise vital funds to make significant strides toward increasing awareness and education."

My wife and I are signed up and will be there - and yep, I'll be in the same getup as I wore last Sunday and still thinking of ways to amp it up a little more!

Anybody from this area planning on participating? Clock? Casey?

Yooper, laziness, inertia, and church attendance will keep me from being at this great event in Chicago this weekend. I've considered going the last three years, but have never made it. Also, my wife has a badly injured finger right now and the day would be uncomfortable for her. Enough excuses? Have a great day there and I'll be thinking aboutyou.

Thanks for the reminder of the Sea Blue walk/run Sunday 9/15 in Chicagoland A Yooper. May I suggest you add 3 blue and white helium ballons tied with a string to each arm when you do your walk/run?

No offense personally to you Clock but "Everyone" always has reasons for not partcipating. Someone else will do it for me and I won't be missed. What if everyone thought that? Pink wins again! They get out in droves for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Even if you don't walk or run, go any way and cheer the others on. Wear your blue! Be a Yooper!

Speaking for me, I started walking in events 8 weeks after surgery. I work weekends and I have to use vacation days to walk on weekend events. Last weekend I drove 180 miles one way to be in an event. The month is half over. Many cities are having prostate cancer events that you could make a day of.
Get up everyone and get out there. Do whatever you can to help get the word out to other men who may have cancer now or later.

Update on what I'm doing this month: (hoping I can pull this all together since I just decided to do it today) next Sat is the annual chilifest at Distinctive Gardens which I decided to enter this year for fun-I make a pretty darn good chili. This fest draws quite a crowd so we decided to use it as an opportunity to bring about awareness for prostate cancer. Our booth is gonna be decorated in blue, I've ordered brochures on getting screened & blue ribbon stickers to give out. My husband's newest favorite phrase since his diagnosis is "Chin Up" so we are calling my chili "Chin Up Chili for Men". We got black t -shirts with the blue ribbon on the back with "chin up" written across it in white. Well, I completed the "9th Annual SEA Blue Walk/Run" presented by Us TOO International and Wellness Place last Sunday at Lincoln Park in downtown Chicago.  The weather wasn't the greatest - rained pretty steady (hard at times) the whole time!  Got soaked to the bone but it all came together for our cause!

 

While there I got to meet Chicago's WGN-TV anchor, Steve Sanders, who I found out is also a prostate cancer survivor, having had successful treatment nearly 3 years ago.  He told me he has an undetectable PSA and no SE's and is doing great!  Steve was there to once again MC this year's event.

 

I also got to meet Thomas Kirk, who many of you probably know is the president & CEO of Us TOO International.  We also had a great conversation and through Tom I got to meet Steve Sanders.

Thanks for the update Yooper. I was hoping you would report in.

I watched WGN that evening down here in Florida and they had a 30 second spot on the walk/run. Looked like it had rained during the event.

I really liked the theme and on the website they showed pictures of previous races. Appeared to be a great event. Even showed a dog wearing a blue t-shirt.

Hey Bill - yes, it was a great event, and despite the weather they still had a good turnout. I saw a few dogs sporting the colors during the run, it was pretty cool. They will be posting pics of this year's event on their website soon.

They also did free screenings, so it will be interesting to see how many men took advantage of that. There were also several booths set up for educational purposes - re: testing, treatment approaches, basic PCa stuff.

I'll check the web site to see the pictures. I really liked the theme of a Sea of Blue. You fit in well.

Sounds like the booths are like the Zero Run/Walk. Last year they had free testing, booths set up for education. They even gave out free books explaining all you options of treatment and a survivors tent. I will be doing the Zero Run/Walk here in Hollywood, FL 9/29 along the beach on a boardwalk and streets. Should be fun. We have been getting a lot of rain here, hope it is a clear day!

Were you wearing blue or did tell someone you had PCa and this could happen to you?

Remember that as long as you are leaking, wear dark colors. I am still leaking also so please check back after you have the sling installed, I am holding out a little longer before I throw in the towel.

Guest maybe you did your part for PCa awareness by scaring those kids with the "C" word.

Thanks for posting, I have felt like I was one of the very few still dealing with incontinence after a year. Every time I hear a newbie saying they are continent after 6 weeks, I sink into a brief depression. I talked to my uro about the sling but had some reservations and I just want to try to tolerate it some more. Reading your numbers, I can see why you want to now try it.

Congrats on your Zero Club membership, your signature shows no PSA after April 2011. Hope you are still in the club.

The newspaper in my town, the Modesto Bee was not interested in giving a single inch of space for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. I tried to write a letter to the Editor where the paper puts reader's letters. My letter was rejected. I wrote directly to the Editor and received no response. Finally in frustration I called the Editor of the Modesto Bee.

He didn't call back, but a reporter did. He said he searched the Associated Press and didn't find a single article about Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and he rejected doing so. I asked him why the Bee had a story on the front page of the paper this week about a man who liked working his hot dog stand, but wouldn't run a story about a disease that will impact 1 in 6 men.

He thought it over and agreed to do a story about prostate cancer!! While it won't run in the month of September it will run sometime in Nov. This was a victory!!

I also maintain a pre and post surgery forum which is now receiving more than 3,000 page views per/month.

My wife and I had an opportunity this month to be on two radio shows to promote our book about our experiences with PC and PC awareness month, Additionally, an excerpt from our book is in the current Sept/Oct edition of Coping With Cancer magazine.

Welcome Rick, love the name of your book. I used to live in San Ramon many years ago.

You are doing a great job out there. Why don't people know about Prostate Cancer Awareness month? Wait until next month and see the difference with Breast Cancer Awareness. NFL players will be wearing pink shoes and refs will be throwing pink flags, etc etc.
